Ciao a tutti! (Hello everyone),

This semester, our students have been developing their Italian language skills through songs, games, stories and interactive classroom activities. From Prep to Year 6, students are building their language skills while celebrating Italian culture, history and landmarks. 

Prep and Year One

Students have participated in activities to introduce themselves and answer questions, for example, noticing that there are greetings for different times of the day (e.g. Buongiorno; Buon Pomeriggio; Buon sera; Buon notte). Asking and answering questions, such as “Ciao, come ti chiami?” “Mi chiamo…,e tu?” (Hi, what’s your name? My name is…, and you?).  Students are loving engaging in games to learn their colours and numbers from 0-10 and beyond. 

Year 2 and Year 3

This semester, students have been learning the names of common objects in Italian. They have worked on identifying and describing items found in the classroom, using simple phrases, such as “Che cos’e?” (What is it?), and “E una matita.” (It is a pencil).

Year 4 and Year 5

The Year 4/5 students have enjoyed working in pairs to research and learn interesting facts about famous Italians, such as Michelangelo. They illustrated and created posters about their famous person.  Furthermore, students have worked on writing descriptive sentences about themselves, focusing on using correct grammar and sentence structure. They worked in small groups to role-play and perform their scripts to the class.

Year 6

The Year 6 students have viewed documentaries about Australian/Italian cities and images of different Italian landmarks. They worked in pairs to research, organise and share the information in print or digital format, for example, creating a report to share with their peers.                                                                                                                                                      

This year the Winter Olympic Games took place in Italy. Students participated in activities such as mapping the locations, researching one of the host Olympic cities, highlighting its history, cuisine and famous landmarks. These activities developed their understanding of the cultural and geographical diversity represented at the Games.
