This term, our dedicated team of HPE educators and enthusiastic students have been busy cultivating an environment of vitality and knowledge. From active outdoor adventures, to excursions at The Alfred Hospital, preparing for Unit 3 and 4 examinations and essential lessons on mental health, alcohol, risk taking, harm minimisation and overall wellness, this term has been a journey filled with inspiration and achievement.
We are thrilled to announce a game changing addition to our educational landscape - The Sandringham College High Performance Centre (HPC). This remarkable development is set to revolutionise our Health and Physical Education program, offering an array of diverse exercises and opportunities for our students.
Our brand new HPC is not just a facility; it's a springboard for achievement, health and lifelong fitness. This state-of-the-art space has been meticulously designed with a beautiful glossy court (basketball, volleyball, netball and badminton courts), classrooms, weights gym, canteen and music rooms. The HPC aims to nurture the potential of our students, enhance their health and wellbeing and inspire them to reach new heights in HPE.
The P.A.R.T.Y. (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) Program is a one-day injury awareness and prevention program for youth age 15 and older. Developed in 1986 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, this program is a vital component of the growing community effort to reduce death and injury in alcohol, drug and risk-related crashes and incidents.
Year 11 and 12 Health and Human Development students were selected to attend P.A.R.T.Y. out of a ballot of hundreds of schools. Sandringham College was the ONLY school selected to attend in 2023 and the FIRST school since 2020 pre covid. We had the opportunity to visit the burns unit, ICU, trauma unit and see in real time how one decision has impacted young people's lives forever. HHD students heard from police officers, paramedics, doctors, nurses, the blood and tissue bank, rehabilitation professionals and injury ambassadors.
This program is real, emotional, scientific and lifesaving. We were so proud of the HHD cohort representing Sandringham College. The incredible facilitator Sue was brought to tears with ho overwhelming bright and kind our students were. They demonstrated the upmost kindness, respect, integrity and inclusiveness.
The program really touched the lives of our students and taught them some very valuable lessons. P.A.R.T.Y. is a health promotion road safety program which students completing Unit 3 & 4 write about on their end of year examination.
In a thrilling outdoor adventure, our Year 9 Outdoor Education classes embarked on an unforgettable journey to the picturesque Gippsland Area from the 18th to the 20th of October. This expedition served as a pivotal moment in the students' educational journey, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and experiential learning.
Preparation for this extraordinary camp was a process that spanned weeks, involving hands-on lessons in essential survival skills. Our students acquired practical knowledge on cooking with a Trangia, expertly setting up tents, administering first aid, and adapting to diverse environments.
During the three-day expedition our adventurous students covered a wide range of activities. They embarked on a thrilling hike, carrying their packs from Koonwarra to Meeniyan Reserve, explored the serene waters with stand-up paddle boarding at Tidal River, tackled the challenging trail leading to Mount Oberon in the captivating Wilsons Promontory National Park and even rode the waves at Sandy Point Beach while trying their hand at surfing.
This immersive experience not only brought our students closer to nature but also embedded a profound sense of community. Nestled in the heart of the Meeniyan Community, our students learned valuable lessons in self-respect, environmental stewardship and the importance of being active contributors to the community.
This camp was a transformational opportunity, where our students honed their skills and grew more self-sufficient, mastering the art of self-reliance in outdoor settings that were new and exciting for many. We sincerely hope that all our students had an amazing time during this camp and that they are inspired to continue their journey in outdoor recreation studies into the next year, as they embark on Year 10. The adventure has only just begun!"
Wishing the very best of luck to our dedicated Unit 3 & 4 students preparing to take on their Health and Human Development, Physical Education and Outdoor Education Studies exams. Your hard work, determination and commitment have brought you to this important moment and we have every confidence in your abilities. Remember, you've got this! Stay calm, focused and trust in the knowledge and skills you’ve learnt this year!
