News from the Year 5-6 classroom

Have you ever stopped to think about how we are able to see the world around us? The answer lies in the amazing power of light! In Science and Technology, have been exploring how we use light in many different ways to help us see and understand the world around us.

One of the most important things to understand about light is that it travels in straight lines and the students have been conducting various experiments using peek boxes that require them to use torches to assist them in seeing multiple objects at varying distances in dark places to determine how light travels. This experiment also assisted them in discovering that when light hits an object, it bounces off in a particular direction. The way that the light bounces off the object is what determines how we see it. For example, if the light hits a red apple, the apple absorbs all of the colours of light except for red. The red light bounces off the apple and into our eyes, which is why we see the apple as red.

In our Physical Education lessons, the students have been engaging in various target games as part of their exploration. One of the notable activities is corner bowls, where the students divide themselves into teams and occupy a specific corner of the playing area. Similar to lawn bowls, their objective is to strike or approach the jack, positioned at the center of the court. Interestingly, all teams have come to realise that the concrete beneath the COLA is uneven, requiring them to account for factors like slope and whether the roll is uphill or downhill. My Hyatt should be taking a lot of notice of this to assist him with his putting.

The large majority of the students have adapted quite well to these difficult conditions but some still rely on brute force in trying to take out the jack, which hasn't been effective on all occasions.

Maybe, if we are successful with a sporting schools grant in the future, we may use the funding to learn how to play lawn bowls properly either at the school (indoor bowls) or have a few lessons at the Walcha Bowling Club.
