Year 7 Students Master Measurement through the Creative Flag Project

Our Year 7 students have just wrapped up an exciting and educational Measurement Unit. This engaging Unit focused on teaching students how to calculate the area and perimeter; essential skills in mathematics.

As part of their learning journey, the students participated in a unique Flags Measurement Task. They calculated the area and perimeter of various national flags, applying their newly acquired skills to real-world examples. This task not only reinforced their understanding of measurement, but also allowed students to appreciate the diversity and design of flags from different countries.

The learning didn’t stop there. Students were then given the opportunity to create their own flags. This creative exercise challenged them to design and subsequently measure their flags, calculating the area and perimeter of their creations. This hands-on project made learning measurement fun and meaningful.

One standout moment from this unit was when a student brought their flag design to life in the digital world of Minecraft. Using the game’s building blocks, they recreated their flag and calculated its area and perimeter within the game. This innovative application of measurement in a virtual environment demonstrated the versatility and practical application of the skills learned.

Overall, the Measurement unit has been a great success, combining creativity with mathematics to enhance our Year 7 students' understanding and enjoyment of the subject.
