What Success Looks Like at Valkstone

One of the questions I am often asked on school tours is, "What does success look like at Valkstone Primary School?"

The answer is both simple and incredibly important.

Success is about every child becoming the very best version of themselves.

Of course, we have high expectations for learning. We want every student to strive to achieve their personal best in reading, writing, mathematics and every area of the curriculum. We celebrate academic growth and achievement because learning is at the heart of why we are here. That is why our school has such a good reputation academically and why our NAPLAN results are so consistently high.

But academic achievement is only one measure of success.

At Valkstone, we place equal importance on the kind of people our students are becoming. This is why our four school values of Respect, Inclusiveness, Curiosity and Integrity sit at the centre of everything we do.

Respect is about showing consideration for others, ourselves and the world around us. It is demonstrated through our words, our actions and the way we care for our learning environment.

Inclusiveness means welcoming everyone and ensuring every person feels they belong. We want our students to celebrate differences, value diverse perspectives and make others feel accepted.

Curiosity is about seeking to understand. We encourage students to ask thoughtful questions, explore new ideas, embrace challenges and approach situations with an open mind rather than making assumptions.

Integrity is about showing our best selves, even when no one is looking. It means doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, taking responsibility for our actions and acting with honesty and kindness.

When I walk through our school, these are the qualities I hope to see. Students including someone who is on their own. Children persisting with a challenging learning task instead of giving up. Someone admitting they made a mistake and learning from it. Students asking thoughtful questions, celebrating the success of others and showing kindness through their everyday actions.

Our goal is not for every child to be the best at everything. Rather, it is for every child to become the best version of themselves. That is what we strive for every day at Valkstone Primary School.

As parents, there is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce these same messages at home. Alongside asking, "What did you learn today?" consider also asking:

• When did you show respect today?

• How did you include someone else?

• What made you curious today? What is something you wondered about today?

• When did you show integrity, even when it wasn't easy?

These conversations remind our children that success is about much more than marks or grades. It is about the person they are becoming.
