Therapy 2023

Interoception Program

It has been a big year for students at Naranga School! The therapy team have loved working alongside our teachers and ES to support our students to grow and thrive.

One of the biggest achievements of 2023 has been the implementation of the Interoception Program across the school. Naranga students have learned about the 8th sense, Interoception.  They are learning more about noticing the signals in their body that give clues about how they are feeling, such as feeling hungry, tired or grumpy.

Students in the Lower Juniors, Upper Juniors and Seniors are participating in this program with their classroom teacher and some of the Naranga Therapists. Sessions focused on trying different experiments and describing how it makes their body fee, focusing on the body parts highlighted in this diagram:

One of our favourite sessions was exploring HOW OUR MOUTH FEELS. The students (and staff!) tried many experiments and made a list of words to describe how their mouths can feel.  One of the favourite - or least favourite ;) - experiments was to suck on a lemon.  It was lots of fun and some students felt very BIG sensations!!

If you'd like to keep practicing over the school holidays, here are some things to try:

  • How do your hands feel touching sand at the beach or doing some art and craft?
  • How does your skin feel in the sun or when you are swimming?
  • How does your stomach feel while dinner is cooking?
  • How does your brain feel on the last day of school??

Have a wonderful break! We can't wait to see you all in term 1.
