Green Team

This term in Green Team our Central Idea has been 'Food can be grown and shared by communities'.

We have been inquiring into:

  • What living things need to survive and thrive
  • How food is grown, and
  • Sustainability

Our first project is to use recycled materials to grow oyster mushrooms, a delicious mushroom used in many dishes from around the world! We have been guided by the expertise of Ms Wasson and the other Green Team teachers (Mr D'Souza, Mr Jones, Miss Strbac Low and Mr McIntosh).

We have had a busy week this week, with two Green Team meetings.

We started by tearing up a lot of cardboard which will act as the structure and the food for the oyster mushrooms to grow. This is called the substrate. The teachers soaked the substrate in boiling water. We also washed all the buckets and containers that will house the mushrooms.

The cardboard wasn’t happy with us tearing it up, but the mushrooms will grow on them. 🍄😂

In our second meeting we began layering substrate and mycelium (which is like the mushroom seeds) into the buckets, just like a lasagne. As well as the cardboard, we have also used recycled coffee grounds from Chapta 4 Cafe for the substrate.

Over the next 10 days, the mycelium will fully colonise and grow into mushrooms. As they get bigger, we will water them and ensure they get enough sunlight.

We are making sure to grow these mushrooms in the safest way possible. It is very important to remember to never touch mushrooms that you see growing in the wild. If you do see mushrooms in the wild, leave them alone and tell a grown up.
