A well-designed Library Space
Although books and bookshelves are an integral part of the library space, the area within the walls of the library has evolved to become much more. Gone are the days of librarians walking around shushing students, demanding silence. Libraries are now vibrant, energetic and welcoming spaces.
The Library at Bluff Road is a multifunctional space, acting as a classroom during class time, used primarily for the timetabled reading classes that engage students and nurture a love of books and stories.
When the bell rings for breaks, the space transforms into a buzzing hive of activity, with students enjoying board games, UNO, chess and other fun activities - completely device free! It also becomes a creative hub where students from various year levels can come together to paint, draw, create and socialise. For students who prefer a quiet atmosphere, we have a peaceful quiet reading space for those looking to escape into their favourite book. And above all the library is a safe space for all students.
After listening to the voices of our 8 and 9 students via a survey to see what they would like in the Holloway Road Library, it was clear that there is a strong interest in establishing a dedicated reading space as well as continuing with the makerspace creative area. I am excited to say library staff will make this happen for students from day 1 in 2025. Holloway Road Library like the Bluff Road Library will have 3 zones during breaks.
There will be a
I am also establishing a variety of clubs that students will be able to sign up to during HeadStart and we will run more competitions to encourage reading. So, watch this space as Holloway Road Library evolves. Exciting times ahead!!!
