Year 9 Courage to Care Incursion

In an unforgettable experience, our Year 9 students had the opportunity to meet Holocaust survivors. The event was designed to foster understanding and compassion, allowing students to hear firsthand accounts of resilience and survival.

During the meeting, survivors shared their personal stories, highlighting their experiences during the Holocaust and the lessons they learned about humanity, tolerance, and the importance of remembering history. Students were deeply moved by the courage of these individuals and engaged in thoughtful discussions about the impacts of prejudice and discrimination.

The session concluded with a Q&A, where students asked insightful questions, showing their genuine interest in learning more about this critical part of history. This meeting not only enriched the students' understanding but also reinforced the importance of preserving the memories of those who lived through such challenging times.

We are grateful to the survivors for their willingness to share their stories and to our staff for organizing this impactful event. It is our hope that these conversations will inspire students to promote kindness and acceptance in their own lives.

Year 11 VCE History

Modern History seeks to inform, build and develop the student's understanding and awareness of the world around them. A significant theme for the Year 11 cohort in their study of 20th century history, is human suffering.

Our Year 11 Senior History students embarked on a poignant educational trip to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. This visit was a significant component of their curriculum, aimed at deepening their understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact on society. Students participated in a guided tour, exploring the museum’s extensive exhibits that detail the historical events, personal stories, and the importance of remembrance. A highlight of the visit was a moving talk from a Holocaust survivor, who shared their personal journey and the importance of standing against hatred and intolerance.

The trip concluded with a discussion session, where students expressed their thoughts and feelings about what they had learned. It was an invaluable experience that not only enhanced their historical knowledge but also encouraged empathy and a commitment to promoting tolerance. It was a proud moment for our Year 11 History cohort who fully engaged in these discussions and asked questions, even with 4 other schools in the room.

This term, Year 11 history students delved into the complex and tragic events of the massacre in Prijedor and genocide in Srebrenica that took place between 1992-1995, during the Bosnian War. This was followed by an intense study of the Apartheid regime which took place in South Africa between 1948 to 1994. As key components of their curriculum, students explored the atrocities and humanitarian impact of these events, through a combination of documentary screenings, group discussions, personal stories and a range of digitised artefacts from these periods.

By exploring the historical context and key events, our Year 11 History cohort have developed a deeper understanding of human atrocities that occurred in different parts of the world and are inspired to challenge injustice and contribute positively to society.
