Highlights

Newington's Victoria Park, saw Australia's top young athletic talents take national competition in their rapid stride last Saturday.

Year 7 talent, Grace Hunter, delivered a performance to remember at the Australian Athletics National Cross Country Championships in Ballarat.

On a rugged 3km course at Newington’s Victoria Park complete with ankle-deep mud, biting 8-degree temperatures, and brutal terrain, Grace rose to the challenge. Running with trademark grit, she crossed the line as Queensland’s top finisher and claimed an outstanding 4th place overall.

The race was as close as they come: just 19 seconds separated the top four runners, turning the final stretch into a battle of endurance and sheer willpower. Grace’s relentless drive and composure under pressure shone through, cementing her reputation as one of the nation’s brightest young distance runners.

Her heroics also played a pivotal role in the Queensland team triumph. Grace, alongside Queensland’s top three finishers, all placed inside the top seven and combined to deliver a dominant performance that secured the gold medal in the teams’ event. A testament to their collective strength and determination.

For Clayfield, the pride is palpable. Grace’s performance not only highlights her personal resilience but also showcases Queensland’s growing depth in cross country talent.

Congratulations, Grace. An extraordinary effort on the national stage!

Metropolitan North Athletics

Clayfield Athletes Shine at Metropolitan North Athletics

A total of nine athletes from our athletics program proudly represented Clayfield at this week’s Metropolitan North Regional Athletics Trials, held across two action-packed days at QSAC. Their performances were a true testament to the growth of our restructured program, with students showing the rewards of hard work, consistency, and commitment to training.

Our athletes contested a wide range of events, including the 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, discus, and high jump, with many achieving personal bests, medals, and State Championship qualifiers.

Day 1 Highlights

The sprinters got things moving in the 12 Years 100m, with Ben Fields (Year 7) and Oliver Crooke (Year 7) impressing in the heats. Oliver advanced to the final, where he battled strongly to finish 5th overall, narrowly missing selection.

In the 16 Years Girls 100m, Hayley Colless, Zoe Goodes-Stibbards, and Isabella Webb, all surged into the final, showcasing Clayfield’s depth in the sprints. Zoe produced a standout performance, storming home to claim the silver medal and secure a State Championships qualifier, while Hayley and Isabella delivered strong runs against a quality field.

In the field, Everley Eckers (Year 7) continued her steady rise with a personal best in the 13 Years Girls High Jump, while Phoebe Lockyer (Year 10) soared to a State Championships qualifier in the 16 Years High Jump.

The distance squad also stamped their authority, with Grace Hunter claiming victory in the 12 Years 1500m.

Day 2 Highlights

Day 2 opened with Isabella Webb powering her way to a bronze medal in the 16 Years Discus.

Soon after, Grace was back on the start line, showing courage and composure in the 12 Years 800m, finishing a close 2nd to her training partner after a massive few days of racing.

The sprints returned to centre stage as Oliver, Ben, Hayley, Zoe, and Bella all advanced to the 200m finals. In the field, Matilda Woodhead produced one of the standout performances of the meet, jumping a personal best in the 15 Years High Jump to record a State Championships qualifier and claim the silver medal.

The 200m finals capped off a brilliant two days. Oliver and Ben fought hard to finish 7th and 8th, while Zoe added to her medal tally with a bronze. Hayley delivered a strong run to notch a State Championships qualifier. Rounding out an incredible meet for our athletes, Hayley also qualified in the 16 Years hurdles.

Looking Ahead

Our qualified athletes, Grace Hunter, Matilda Woodhead, Phoebe Lockyer, Hayley Colless, and Zoe Goodes-Stibbards will now turn their attention to the Queensland Schools State Championships in Townsville this October.

This week’s results reflect not only the dedication of these athletes but also the spirit of Clayfield’s athletics program.

I am absolutely bursting with pride at what our students have achieved and cannot wait to see them shine on the state stage.

Clayfield Shines at Andrews Cup Athletics Despite Rainy Conditions

On Thursday 21 August, the Andrews Cup athletes took to the track and field at QSAC for their annual showcase. Despite a damp start with early morning rain, the competition pressed on and our Primary girls rose to the occasion. With more than 800 athletes from 10 schools competing for the coveted Aggregate Trophy and Percentage Cup, the atmosphere was electric.

As the last of the Andrews Cup core sports, the Athletics competition is one of the marquee events on the calendar. Clayfield was proudly represented by 59 athletes, each contributing valuable points through determination, effort, and school spirit. Their consistency was rewarded, with the girls securing a strong first place in the Percentage Cup a testament to the resilience of our athletes.

Standout Performances

  • 8 Years: Elsie Slaughter showed great composure, finishing 3rd in the 100m Division 4.
  • 9 Years: Winnie Woodcroft produced one of the day’s highlight performances, claiming 1st in the 800m Division 1, while Ada Spiteri ran superbly to place 3rd in the 100m Division 10.
  • 10 Years: Charlize Gri impressed in multiple events, finishing 3rd in the 800m Division 2 before storming home to claim 2nd in the 200m Division 1. Ava Spizzirri also excelled, leaping to 2nd in the Long Jump Division 3.
  • Sue Pavish Relay: The Clayfield team of Lainey Madders, Harper Horwood, Charlize Gri, and Scarlett McDonnell ran bravely in testing conditions, finishing 8th overall against a fiercely competitive field.

These results mark another successful chapter for Clayfield College in Andrews Cup Athletics. The effort and determination on display have set a strong foundation for the future, and we look forward to recognising our athletes’ contributions at the End-of-Semester Assembly, where their achievements will be celebrated as part of our sporting community’s 2025 story.
