It has been a big couple of weeks in Sport in the Primary School. Our boys enjoyed the inaugural invitational Britton Shield AFL Day last week, showcasing their skill and efforts throughout the day.
A huge congratulations to our Andrews Cup Athletics Team who triumphantly brought home the Percentage Cup this year. It was a valiant effort on all the students who demonstrated the Clayfield spirit through every event.
My sincere thanks to Miss Amy Lewin for her organisation of both events and the positive impact she has on the students and the Sports Program. Thank you also to the Primary and Sports staff who assisted on both days.
RUOK? Day will be observed on Thursday 11 September. This day is dedicated to encouraging open conversations about mental health and wellbeing. We would like all students to wear a touch of yellow with their school uniform; this could be yellow socks, ribbons, hairbands, hats or any other accessory. Undergarments are not to be worn on top of the uniform and all students who catch public transport, must be in full school uniform to and from school. During lunchtime, we will be running some fun activities, together with learning moments in Wellbeing and Foundation Lessons, Year Level Meetings and Personal Development lessons.
On Friday 29 August, join Youngman House for a fun-filled crazy hair/wig and sock free dress day to support The Kids’ Cancer Project!
Students are allowed to wear FREE DRESS, but to take part in this fundraiser, they must come with crazy hair/wig and/or crazy socks - that's the whole point of the day!
Let’s mix a little fun with a whole lot of heart to make a real difference!

Our Year 4 and 5 cohorts have come back from camp buzzing with excitement and so proud of themselves for their achievements while away. They attempted things they weren’t sure they could manage, ate food they hadn’t tried before, made new friends, and lived without electronics and handball (mostly) for three whole days!
The attending staff were so proud of them – with only a few wobbles and some struggles to get to sleep on the first night, the students absolutely made the most of the experiences on offer and showed up for each other in really positive ways. They supported their friends, worked in teams to achieve goals, and challenged themselves to reach beyond their previous personal best.
The Bush School experience has been a highlight for our Prep students this term. During the three Bush Ranger sessions, the children were enthralled to be introduced to a variety of native plants and insects that were new to them. Armed with magnifying glasses, they explored the bush to find as many different species as they could. Finding a giant burrowing cockroach caused quite a stir. It was as big as a Prep child's hand!
Bush walks and self-exploration opportunities in the three teacher-led sessions saw the children finding natural items in their habitat and observing their features and characteristics. They learnt how to care for the environment and keep it healthy and enjoyed creating their own artworks from natural materials. Bush School culminated in a camera activity where the children drew pictures in a film strip to show their favourite Bush School observations.
Talking to the Preps about their experience, it's clear the outdoor playground helped add to their special memories.
Maddie: "I saw the bush turkey making a nest out of leaves and sticks."
Charlie: "I liked when we went on a bush walk and we saw bats hanging in the trees."
Mila: "I liked going on the flying fox because you could hold on and swing."
Amy: "I loved swinging on the bars in the playground. I loved to be like a bat and hang upside down."
Coming off the back of a wonderful Book Week, I thought it important to highlight the benefits of students reading every night. Not only can it be a comforting bedtime ritual, but it’s also one of the most powerful tools to support students’ literacy development. Regular reading helps children expand their vocabulary, improve their listening skills, and learn how language works.
They hear new words in the context of a story, absorb grammar patterns naturally, and start recognizing new and more complex sentence structures. Books take children beyond their everyday experiences, expanding their imagination and sparking creativity. Reading about different characters, encourages empathy and demonstrates interpersonal skills. The quiet time spent reading with a family member can create special connections and is a chance to slow down after a busy evening. Most importantly, children who are read to regularly often grow up to enjoy reading themselves. By making books a daily habit, you’re helping them see reading as a fun, rewarding and lifelong habit.
