As everyone arrived for the Saturday workshop, you could feel a buzz of excitement from all the students getting ready to play and sing with Kate Ceberano. Viotti Stings, alongside members of Symphonic Winds had the privilege of accompanying Kate on her hit song ‘Brave’, from her debut album released in 1989, while Canzona, Ciao Bella and Ragazzi were invited to sing with her as backing vocals for local musician Meg Washington’s 2021 pop song, ‘Lazarus Drug.’
It was incredibly meaningful for the Clayfield students to hear her speak about the meaning of her lyrics, and the personal themes of courage, reflection and perseverance. When she workshopped the pieces, we all got the sense that she truly cared about helping us make the best sound possible, and every single student was so in awe of her musical talent and that powerful voice she’s known for across the country. We even had the time to ask her questions, and we’ll never forget how much Kate just radiated this passion for performing. She talked about the stage being a safe place for musicians, and we know so many of the students were really inspired by her openness and love for music.
At On the Green, both of our performances with Kate were a hit, and we just knew the rest of her set would be amazing, as it absolutely was! Not only was her talent incredible, but she was able to quickly get the audience involved with a crowd of people dancing before the stage, plus an extra-special feature with a selected group from the audience to join her. Ultimately, Kate Ceberano was incredible both in her performance at On the Green and during the students’ workshop with her.
It was a special weekend that Clayfield won’t forget!
