Sustainability Club news

For Term 2 and Term 3, Sustainability Club has focused on the roll out of a few new bin systems around Box Hill High! We’ve just finished the building of two big compost tumblers, which we made ourselves during many lunchtimes, and are in the process of introducing the kitchen caddies across specific school locations like the canteen, food tech, and staff rooms.

We’ve also set up bins in the library for used markers/pens and batteries, in order to manage unnecessary waste. Finally, we have also introduced bins in the quad for cans and bottles which will be recycled through the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme, earning us 10 cents per can/bottle which will be put towards future sustainability initiatives around the school.

In addition, if families are engaging with CDS at home, we welcome you to donate the earnings from your recyclables to our Sustainability Club using the Donation Partner Code C2000023793 when recycling through a Visy refund point.

Additionally, we attended Kew High School’s sustainability summit, where we participated in a variety of sustainable activities, attended a Q&A session for potential careers in sustainability, and listened to the experiences and strategies of Kew High School students. Kew High was an inspiration for us and for many other schools, and we returned to our school with a new passion and drive. The students led many programs there, including planting a garden at their local café, taking cans to a container deposit scheme drop off point, and surveying the school after hours to find any appliances in the classrooms to switch off to save on energy bills and consumption.
