Term 3 Sport

The inaugural SPC Fishing Club gets some tips from the Ballarat Fly Fishing Club.

Term 3 has been ticking along nicely at St Patrick's College. A record 16 teams are competing in either ACC at senior level, and BAS at all year levels. We have also added a fishing club which is a fantastic opportunity for the boys that love to go fishing. At the moment they are learning how to fly fish by volunteers at the Ballarat Fly Fishing Club!

The following sports are coming to the end of their respective seasons and a lot of teams are preparing for finals:

  • Table Tennis – All year levels
  • Squash/Racquetball – All year levels
  • Basketball – All year levels
  • Soccer – Junior & Senior
  • Senior Hockey – Years 9-12

Our committed staff are doing a fantastic job coaching the boys and we are achieving some great results across all sports. We wish all students and support staff participating in finals across all competitions the best of luck. We're sure you will do SPC proud!

BAS Lap of the Lake

The BAS Lap of the Lake that was supposed to be held on Wednesday, 28 August has be postponed due to inclement weather. It will now be held on Monday, 9 September.

Nationals Cross Country

Congratulations to Ollie Ryan, Mitch Korosec and Cody Torney who have all qualified to represent Victoria at the Nationals Cross Country Event to be held in Tasmania from September 1-3. All 3 boys are regular participants in all of our athletic events, and always represent their school with pride. Well done boys on a fantastic achievement.

Taatee Shield

The annual Taatee Shield football match was played in great spirits between our Clontarf boys and SPC All Stars on the Main Oval on Tuesday. The Clontarf boys got the win, coming back from 20-points down to win by five points. The word “Taatee” hails from the Wathaurong language and means friendship, which was evident in spades on the day. Well done to all involved. Read more about the match, and see more pictures, in the Clontarf report.

ACC Basketball

Our second year in the ACC and again we're playing finals. What an amazing achievement!

Wednesday saw our senior boys travel down to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (neutral territory!) for the ACC semi final against Whitefriars.

We started the game extremely well jumping out to an 18-6 lead. Seth Wall, Ned Renfree and Harry Alsop shooting well to start. Our bigs, Nathan Jolly, Brock Healy and Plucky, all playing good defence and getting after the rebounds.

Seems we got a little excited! Whitefriars just started to work their way back into the game and our boys just seemed to change the way they played allowing it to happen. At the half it was a one point difference.

Second half saw it go point for point until a few costly turnovers resulted in us being down by 10. At that point we battled and eventually ran out the game with a narrow loss - 52 to 41.

I'm very proud of these boys who have represented SPC with pride at VCC, Champions Cup, ACC and some are also playing BAS. They also have a fair chance of winning it this year all while completing a very busy VCE schedule!

Big thanks to Eric and Jarrod for their amazing coaching skills and also Lappo, Simon and Jacko for keeping everything ticking along!  What a team!

Soccer

SPC JUNIORS

SPC White 2 drew with Damascus 2

The Paddy boys started out having multiple chances in front of goal, but couldn’t convert, going into the half 1-0 down. Damascus came out and quickly put a second in, before SPC put two in very late to tie the game at 2-2.

SPC Blue

SPC Blue 8 def BCC 1

Our boys put on another tremendous scoring display by putting another 8 past a decent opposition. Full praise to this group of boys who are constantly showing positive teamwork, sportsmanship and consistency in their football. Each of them playing with a smile on their face and demonstrating positive work rates, SPC Blue is proving to be an exciting group of budding footballers.

SPC Green

SPC Green 1 drew with Ballarat Grammar 1

Our fourth game of the season was played against Ballarat Grammar at Ballarat Grammar. Going into this game both teams had been undefeated, so a close game was expected. The boys played some excellent attacking football during this game as well as defending strongly. Aiden O’Keeffe scored our only goal midway through the first half. Unfortunately, Grammar was able to reply soon after. The game was tied at half time. Both teams had opportunities to score during the second half, however, it must be conceded that Grammar had many more. The boys were happy to finish the game with a draw, which, was a fair result for two very closely matched teams.

BAS 1st XI

SPC 11 def Ballarat Grammar 1

St Pat's First XI had another dominant performance in their final game of the BAS regular season against Ballarat Grammar’s 2nd team.

Back to playing on Shed Oval, it was always going to be an uphill battle for the visitors as a win would ensure St Pat's would finish first heading into the final. The boys didn’t pull any punches, with a scoreline of 6-0 taking the boys to half time. Goals from Josh Remington, Manny Hontzogloy, the returning Leonard Goodison, as well as an impressive aerial volley from Rex Van Berkel, put the game far beyond doubt before the second half.

The second half continued much the same way, with a further five goals added to the St Pat's tally. In the final minute of the game, Ballarat Grammar managed to score a well-deserved consolation goal as Luis Maldonado’s goalkeeping prowess in his debut game finally came undone by Grammar’s relentless enthusiasm and refusal to quit.

BAS 2nd XI

SPC Green 2 def BCC 2nd XI 0

The final game of the home and away season, saw our mighty SPC Green side venture once more across Wanliss Rd to Ballarat Clarendon College to meet their second XI side. Whilst we relied on many other results to gain entry to the grand final in a couple of weeks' time, the boys knew their job was simple win and the rest will be what it will be.

After an almighty gallant fight last week against St Patrick's College's First XI, the Green had belief in the product they'd given their growing fan base over the season to date. Boosted by a couple of handy inclusions in Harry Sutherland and Ben Hancock, the Greens brought their best and had most of the better chances and possession in the first half despite centre back Cooper “the broom” Neil hitting the woodwork before Joey Wesley's follow up went over the bar. At 0-0 at the break but in the box seat, one final tune up at half time was needed to instil the belief within the group going into the second half.

The boys immediately got to work with Charlie Pope and Harry Sutherland linking up well throughout the middle. Lincoln Chetcuti also ramped up the intensity with many ferocious first ball and intercepting tackles breaking down any threat from BCC. Lenny Ward continued his incredible run of form throughout the season as the threat on goal became lethal. Some exquisite link up play saw Charlie Pope fouled in the box with stand in referee Darragh Kiely (who was good enough to help us out!) given no choice but to award a penalty to SPC. Charlie made no mistake as his shot hit the back of the net to make it 1-0.

From there, the chances continued throughout the rest of the half and with the final touch of the match, James "such is life" Clark hit a shot towards an empty net. The crowd watched on and held their breath in anticipation as the ball raced along the surface and into the corner of the net. Euphoria set in as James headed to the corner flag to celebrate with the adoring fans; 2-0 the result in a calm display across the match.

It should be noted that throughout the match, a new combination was found. Cooper the Broom Neil was always after a pan to help sweep up in defence. Ask and you shall receive with Owen "dust pan" Mahoney proving his worth and rise in development with an incredible performance at the back with Cooper. The ultimate centre half partnership. All in all, an enjoyable season and a huge thank you to all of the boys who pulled on the mighty Green/White/Yellow kit across the season to help our 2nd XI side. A great group of young men who were respectful and eager throughout the season, I am incredibly proud to have worked alongside them to represent our school. We'll be back bigger and bolder next year. Onwards you Greens!

John James Medal Presentation

The Annual John James Medal Dinner will be held on Monday, 2 September. We look forward to celebrating all of our award winners including Best & Fairest winners for each year level as well as the annual John James Medal. Results will be posted in Term 3’s final edition of The Crest.

Communication

The best form of communication we have with parent/guardians is via the Parent Access Module (PAM). Students require permission to participate in all sport. Parent/guardians will receive the information through a PAM activity permission. Please ensure that you read the information prior to giving permission and that you also talk to students about the information.

The daily messages are one of the best ways we can distribute information to students about sports that are on offer and where sign up meetings will be held. Students should check the daily messages regularly.

Once students have signed up for a sport, we will be adding them into a MS Teams group where they can communicate directly with their coach. Students must communicate with their coach if they are unavailable for a match so we can find a replacement to ensure we have a full team for each match. If students are unsure of how to sign up for a sport or want more information, they should visit sports staff in the gymnasium.

Sports Uniform

Students need to ensure they are in the correct uniform to participate. The general sport uniform is the navy blue polo top, navy shorts and white socks. Certain sports will require very specific clothing e.g. Soccer will need to purchase SPC soccer shorts and socks and Basketball will need to purchase SPC Basketball shorts. Students should check with their coach as to what is required. Uniform can be purchased through Dobsons, online or at the College during shop opening hours.

I wish all students and coaches the best in Term 3. Always play the game in the right spirit, wear the correct uniform and respect the facilities, home and away. St Patrick’s College is steeped in sporting tradition, and you are encouraged to add more chapters to our past endeavours.
