These family fono (meetings) are important for the ongoing partnership between our college and community. From these spaces, we work collaboratively to support your children in their aspirations, hopes and dreams as they grow to become active members in their family and our wider community.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Harmony Youth Summit – Le Mana

On Friday 28th of June, 25 Pasifika students represented our college at the 2024 Harmony Youth Summit hosted by the Centre for Multicultural Youth’s (CMY) Le Mana team. The day was filled with workshops, panels, and opportunities for our young people to network and build positive relationships with other Pasifika secondary students across Victoria.

Upon arrival, all students and staff signed in at the desk where each participant received their itinerary for the day. Students had the chance to engage in workshops from different areas like the Performing Arts, Apprenticeships, Youth Work, Sport with NRL, and much more. Once all the schools had arrived, everyone congregated in the briefing room where the hosts greeted the groups and presented the ground rules for the day. The summit opened up with an acknowledgement of country, and inspiring speech by the Wyndham Mayor Councillor, Jennie Barrera, highlighting the importance of our future and daring to pursue our dreams.

A feature of the day’s program included an opportunity to hear from current University of Melbourne staff and students. One such speaker discussed life at university and provided Year 12 pupils with useful tips to help them navigate higher education. Dr Rita Seumanutafa-Palala spoke about Pasifika Excellence and the challenges many young people will experience.  She advised listeners to keep striving for their dreams and approach their studies with purpose.

Dr Seumanutafa-Palala’s new role at the University of Melbourne is to create and maintain safe spaces for Pasifika students at the institution and act as the voice for Pasifika studies. She is currently working on a passion project, to establish the university’s first Pasifika university students’ group.

The day was well organised and structured to allow all participants to depart with new learning applicable to either their school, studies, or their jobs. Some of the Year 10 students who attended reported that the day consisted of useful information for their futures.

Thank you to CMY’s Le Mana group for inviting Craigieburn Secondary College’s Pasifika students to this informative and engaging summit.
