Auxiliary News

Welcome back to school for our returning families, and a warm welcome to our new families – we hope you have been able to meet some other parents in your year groups, ready to journey the next six or so years together.

It has been a busy start for the Auxiliary as we supported the numerous events held at the start of each year, and my heartfelt thanks to all that volunteered their time so generously.

There are two Auxiliary meetings per term, and anyone is welcome to attend. The next meeting is at 8.30am on Monday 16 March (TC Staff Lounge). We also have a Facebook page 'TC Auxiliary', which we use to share event details and volunteer requests.

There are a few remaining events over the next few weeks that we are seeking assistance – anyone can volunteer their time, and there will always be someone to help and guide. No previous experience necessary, just a smile and friendly face! Click the button below to see the volunteering opportunities.

Dates for your diary:

  • Friday, 1 May - Auxiliary Long Lunch (The Hall, at The Camfield)

  • Friday, 31 July - Auxiliary Morning Tea (Gibney Hall, TC)

Finally, as many of our Committee members are graduating from TC at the end of the year, we will be seeking new members – please consider whether this is an opportunity for you, we would love to have a chat about it.

Looking forward to seeing many of you soon!

College Parking

“I'M LATE, I'M LATE FOR A VERY IMPORTANT DATE” SO PARKING RULES DON’T APPLY TO ME! (Adapted from Alice in Wonderland)

When families join the College community, they immediately assume a ‘shared stewardship’ for the well-being of all within our College. This reality is best described in terms of: “All of our kids are all of our kids.” As such, the safety of every child attending Trinity must always be our first priority. Rather than waiting for an issue which puts the safety of our students at risk, all drivers are reminded of their social obligation to exhibit safe, courteous and respectful driver behaviour to uphold student wellbeing. Thank you to those many families who do exhibit these positive behaviours on a consistent basis.

As an inner-city school, the reality is that our College campus is located near busy roads, and the tight College footprint means there is limited parking on site or nearby.

Unfortunately, there have been a few cases of drivers ignoring clearly signed street parking regulations; parking in or across driveways/pedestrian crossings; parking on the verge of roads and onto footpaths, in designated bus areas, ACROD or Staff Only bays.

When reminded of responsibilities as drivers, some attempt to legitimise actions under the pretence of being “in a rush and I will only be parking for a minute”; similarly, some adopt an attitude of “I know and understand the rules, but they only apply to others because adherence to them doesn’t suit me at the moment”. Such behaviour is definitely not good modelling for our children. It sends a message that road safety rules only apply if they suit the individual and that personal convenience trumps child safety – surely not mindsets that we want to foster in our impressionable young people.

Please be assured that the College continues to work proactively with the City of Perth to enhance the safe movement of traffic around our campus. Additionally, we continue to emphasise the importance of safe driving and appropriate parking for our Year 12 students, who, if they elect to drive to school, must park ‘off-campus’.

Furthermore, the College does its best to anticipate large-scale events and special occasions that would see increased demand for on-site parking; on these occasions, the College arranges parking at Gloucester Park. It is worth noting that these bookings are dependent on venue availability, and that they are paid arrangements that do not come cheaply. When the College communicates in advance with families about any special parking and puts out signage directing drivers to Gloucester Park, we respectfully ask for these instructions to be followed.

We have two major traffic pressure points:

Sailani Avenue - Sailani Avenue presents issues during afternoon pick up each day. Please do not park in the ‘No Standing’ safety zone designated by the orange cones as this restricts the flow of all traffic along Sailani Avenue. Whilst the commencement of PSA sports training, and the greater adoption of students using public transportation as the term continues will help mitigate this issue, the following suggestions will collectively help improve the current situation.

  • Park a short distance away from the front gates and arrange for your son to walk, or walk to the gates yourself for the younger children.

  • Arrange for a pick up time which is slightly after the congestion immediately after the final school bell. For Year 7 to 12 students, it may make things easier to ask your son to attend to books/lockers and other business for a few minutes and then arrange for a 3.15/3.30pm pick up.

  • Encourage older students to utilise public transportation or cycle to school.

Main College Entry – In order to enhance traffic flow and ensure student safety, please adhere to the following.  Drivers:

  • Must not leave their cars whilst in the ‘Kiss & Drive’ area

  • While heading into and using the Kiss & Drive must keep as far to the left as possible and bunch up as much as possible to assist traffic flow

  • Must NOT stop on pedestrian crossings (same rules as on public roads!)

  • Must have their children enter their cars on the LEFT HAND SIDE ONLY when in the Kiss & Drive area OR if picking children up between the Main Gate and the roundabout with the Celtic cross.

Comprehensive information about public transport routes can be found on the TC website.

As a community centred in Christ, we need to continue to think of creative ways to alleviate some of the congestion by ‘being part of the solution not the problem’ and not leaving it to someone else to solve. I wish to affirm and to thank the majority of parents who continue to place safety first and conduct themselves in an exemplary manner.

Social Media Restriction Legislation

From 10 December 2025, new Australian Government legislation will require social media platforms to prevent users under the age of 16 from creating or maintaining accounts. This significant reform, introduced under the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, is designed to enhance the safety and wellbeing of young people online.

The Act aims to strengthen online safety and reduce exposure to online risks, including cyberbullying, grooming, and the pressures of social media engagement. The eSafety Commissioner will regulate compliance and has developed a suite of resources for educators, parents, and young people to assist with the transition.

At a minimum, the government has confirmed the following platforms will be included under the new restrictions:

  • TikTok

  • Instagram

  • Facebook

  • Snapchat

  • X (formerly Twitter)

  • Reddit

Other social media platforms may also be subject to these requirements, depending on their features and intended use.

What the New Law Means

  • Social media platforms must take reasonable steps to block or deactivate accounts held by users under 16 years of age

  • The legislation applies to age-restricted platforms; those primarily designed for social interaction and user-generated content.

  • The responsibility for enforcement lies with the platforms, not with users, families, or schools.

  • The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) and the eSafety Commissioner have issued guidance to support compliance, data handling, and privacy requirements.

Reporting Online Abuse

Students and families are encouraged to report cyberbullying or harmful online behaviour through the appropriate channels:

  • Report to the school, and

  • Report directly to the social media platform involved

If the matter is serious and not adequately resolved, it can be escalated to the eSafety Commissioner for further action. Incidents involving the non-consensual sharing (or threats to share) nude or sexual images are classified as image-based abuse. If such material is used for coercion or blackmail, it may constitute sexual extortion (sextortion). Guidance on responding to these incidents can be found in the Toolkit for Schools: Responding to Image-Based Abuse.

Resources for Families

Families are encouraged to explore the following free resources provided by the eSafety Commissioner:

Further information and FAQs are available at eSafety Social Media Age Restrictions.

Other useful resources:

Practical Steps to Take Before the Change:

  • Exchange contact details: Encourage children to share phone numbers rather than social media handles.

  • Save important content: Back up photos, videos, and posts before account changes take effect.

  • Review account settings: Export data and ensure backups are enabled.

  • Shift online habits: Begin reducing time spent on social media and use messaging apps instead.

  • Stay connected: Set up group chats or friend lists through non-social media platforms.

  • Model healthy digital habits: Talk as a family about the benefits of stepping back from social media and connecting face-to-face or through other means.

At Trinity College, we strongly support these changes as a positive step toward protecting young people online. We encourage families to discuss healthy digital habits and balanced online engagement. While this transition may present some challenges, we believe it will ultimately empower our students to manage their online presence responsibly and foster meaningful, real-world connections beyond social media.
