Term 3 in the Grade 6 Department

The Grade 6 team is excited for a dynamic and engaging Term 3, with students diving into a variety of rich learning opportunities that build on their skills, independence and real-world knowledge. Our Term Topic, Economics and Business, will be woven through several areas of the curriculum and will provide students with hands-on, practical experiences that develop their financial literacy and decision-making skills.

In our Knowledge unit, students will explore how economic resources are classified and why scarcity requires people and governments to make informed choices. They’ll examine the role of work and entrepreneurship within the community and begin to understand how consumer choices are influenced. Students will also learn about taxation, making wise economic decisions and using financial services.

Our Literacy learning this term is closely linked with our Knowledge unit. Students will be reading and viewing a range of texts with a marketing and persuasive focus, including advertisements. They’ll analyse how advertising techniques are used to influence consumers and build their comprehension skills through rich discussions. We will also explore fiction and the hidden meaning in visual texts. In Writing, students will continue to use the Single Paragraph Outline to construct clear, structured paragraphs and will focus on persuasive writing. They will work on developing sentence fluency and structure across all writing tasks.

In Mathematics, students will be deepening their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages, with an emphasis on real-world application, including calculating percentage discounts and exploring financial modelling. These concepts will link directly to our Economics and Business unit, helping students understand the practical use of maths in everyday life. They’ll also explore the order of operations, using it to solve multi-step worded problems. In Measurement, students will convert between units and apply knowledge of multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. Probability will be introduced through the lens of fractions, decimals and percentages, and students will conduct statistical investigations, collecting and analysing their own data. We will also continue to revisit many mathematical concepts in the Daily Review.

Homework will continue to be assigned weekly and is due a day each week (as decided by your Classroom Teacher). Students are expected to read for 40 minutes, five times per week, complete a reading reflection, and complete set Maths tasks via Essential Assessment. Homework details are posted on Google Classroom each week. We appreciate your support in ensuring students have a quiet space at home to complete their work consistently.

As always, we will continue to update families with important information via Compass. If you have any questions regarding your child’s learning or upcoming events, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher through Compass.

We’re looking forward to a purposeful and enriching term ahead with our Grade 6 learners!
