Updates from our Pastoral Groups (Units)

Foundation News ~ Preps ~

In celebration of Book Week, we had a very special visit from Di Walker, who is not only a leader at St Mel’s but also a successful published author! Di shared one of her son’s favourite picture story books from when he was a child, The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear.

The students loved discussing how they would protect the strawberry from the big hungry bear and came up with some very creative ideas! They drew pictures of their plans, including chaining the strawberry up high and surrounding it with marbles so that anyone trying to reach it would slip. It was wonderful to see their imaginations at work as they thought about the story and put themselves in the mouse’s shoes.

Book Week 2026 ~ A Symphony of Stories

What a wonderful celebration of books, stories and the joy of reading we shared during Book Week at St Mel’s!

This year’s theme, “Symphony of Stories,” was brought to life throughout the week as we celebrated the many different stories, characters, voices and ideas that fill our classrooms and bring us together as readers.

Our Book Week Parade was certainly a highlight, with our students and staff proudly bringing much-loved characters and stories to life. There was such a sense of joy across our school as children recognised characters, talked about favourite books and shared their excitement with friends and families.

Like a symphony, every character and every story added something unique to our celebration.

St Mel’s Book Fair Fun!

Our children also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the wonderful range of quality books at our Book Fair and choosing some special new reads to take home. It was fantastic to see so many families joining us and sharing in the love of reading we continue to foster at St Mel’s.

Book Week is always a wonderful reminder of the important place stories hold in our lives. They help us wonder, imagine, learn, understand different perspectives and connect with one another. Most importantly, we hope our celebrations continue to nurture something we value deeply at St Mel’s ~ children who find joy in books and a lifelong love of reading.

Thank you to our families for joining our Symphony of Stories and helping us celebrate the magic of reading together.

St Mel's Breaky Club:

Come for breaky… second breakfast… or even third breakfast — all are welcome!

Our new Foundation students enjoyed trying out Breakfast Club for the first time and it’s safe to say they absolutely loved it! There were smiles, full tummies and a wonderful sense of community to start the day.

Breakfast Club is a beautiful way to gather, connect and ensure everyone begins the morning feeling nourished and ready to learn.

We look forward to welcoming more students as we continue to grow this special initiative.
