Music and Concert Band

Annual Concert
Congratulations to the 150 plus students who performed at the Annual Ensemble Concert on Thursday 4th September at the Brimbank Salvation Army Hall! Ensembles that performed included:
College Choir, Guitar Ensemble, VUSC Honours Band
VUSC Big Band, Stage Band, Jazz Band
Year 7 Concert Band, Year 8 Concert Band, Year 9 Concert Band
It was such a wonderful and outstanding night of music making, congratulations to all students involved.
The level of performances continues to rise each year, which is a testament to the many hours of hard work and dedication of the students and staff of the Music Program.
Victorian Schools Music Festival
We have so far had four Ensembles perform at the Victorian Schools Music Festival this year, with three more to follow:
College Choir – Silver Shield
We started off for the first time in the school’s history by having the College Choir compete in the Open Choir Section. Performing 3 lovely works under the direction of Ms Indu Mulligan and accompanied by Mr Andrew Byrne, the choir gave a beautiful performance and were awarded a Silver Shield.
Year 8 Concert Band – Gold Shield
The Year 8 Concert Band section was held in Geelong this year. The students, who competed for the first time as a stand-alone band, performed 3 works - Skedaddle, Cobra Tango and Salvation is Created. Competing against senior bands from other schools, the students performed amazingly well and were awarded the Gold Shield.
Year 9 Concert Band - Gold Shield
The members of the Year 9 Concert Band travelled to the Hawthorn Arts Centre for their Division 2 (1 being the highest and 5 the lowest) Section of this year’s festival. Again performing 3 works - Billy Goat Hill, Salvation is Created and the epic work 3,2,1 - they too were awarded a Gold Shield for their outstanding performance.
Big Band
The Big Band competed in the Jazz Ensemble section on Tuesday 9th September, playing 3 works, including an incredible performance of a swing version of A Few of my Favourite Things. Unfortunately illness hit the band meaning that four students were unable to perform and we had to have two staff members step in at the last minute. A credit to Mr Hodge and the students, as they still gave a great performance and competed for Adjudicator feedback only.
We still have the Jazz Band and Stage Band competing this Term and the Year 7 Band later in Term 4.
Congratulations to all of our music students for their hard work and achievements, and to our fantastic music staff for supporting and mentoring the students.
