Message from the Deputy Principal

Teaching for Tomorrow
In a world where education is changing rapidly, our teachers are committed to staying ahead of the curve. At Clayfield College, staff professional development is a key priority, strengthening our collective capacity and enhancing student learning. It remains one of the most powerful ways we ensure every student receives rich, relevant and future‑focused learning every day.
According to the OECD’s Trends Shaping Education 2025, global shifts such as artificial intelligence, economic uncertainty and environmental change require schools to continually adapt so students can thrive in a rapidly evolving future. Emerging research also shows that sustained, high‑quality professional development builds teacher capability and improves student learning across diverse contexts.
A 2025 systematic review on Continuing Professional Development (CPD) found that the most effective programs combine pedagogical innovation, technology integration, research-informed practice and professional collaboration. These approaches empower teachers as “agents of change,” able to respond confidently to modern learning needs.
Professional development is not only about teachers. It directly benefits students by supporting engagement and motivation, wellbeing and relationships and classroom innovation. Educational neuroscience shows that updated knowledge about attention and cognition boosts classroom focus and learning outcomes. Professional development programs help teachers use evidence‑based strategies to support social and emotional development, improving school belonging and resilience. Training in AI literacy, digital tools and differentiation equips teachers to meet the needs of all learners in engaging, inclusive ways.
Here at the College, ongoing teacher learning is part of our strategic intent. The College’s Strategic Plan reinforces teacher collaboration and evidence‑based professional learning communities as central to improving student outcomes and supporting whole‑school growth. When teachers learn together, the whole community feels the impact.
At the beginning of the year, staff engaged in a highly enriching professional learning experience on the use of Artificial Intelligence, presented by Dr Nici Sweaney, scientist, strategist and founder of AI Her Way. This session explored the use of AI in everyday contexts, providing staff with practical insights into how these emerging tools are already shaping communication, productivity, and decision‑making in professional settings.
Building on this foundation, Dr Sweaney presented a second session focused specifically on academic staff, with a strong emphasis on leveraging AI to differentiate learning within the classroom. Teachers were guided in how AI can support personalised learning pathways, scaffold student understanding and extend learners at different levels, ensuring that each student is both supported and challenged appropriately. This two-part professional learning initiative not only enhanced staff confidence in engaging with AI but also reinforced our commitment to innovative, future‑focused teaching practices that respond to the diverse needs of our students.
A key initiative introduced in Semester 1 within the Junior School has been our Choose My Path professional development model. This approach recognises that, just as students benefit from personalised learning, so too do teachers. By providing choice and flexibility, it ensures professional learning is relevant, targeted and directly applicable to classroom practice. Across each cycle, teachers select from a range of focused sessions offered throughout the week. This allows teachers to engage in learning aligned to their interests, classroom context and professional goals.
This model has supported greater engagement in professional learning, with teachers able to explore areas of genuine interest and apply new strategies more immediately within their teaching. Following a successful rollout led by the leadership team in Semester 1, Semester 2 will see teachers increasingly facilitating sessions, strengthening professional collaboration and building leadership capacity across the Junior School. Over time, this initiative is fostering a culture of shared expertise, where staff actively contribute to and shape the professional learning of their colleagues. It will continue to evolve as a key feature of professional learning, underpinning our commitment to continuous improvement and high-quality teaching.
Walkthroughs at Clayfield provide a valuable opportunity for teachers to engage in peer observation, allowing them to learn from one another, share expertise, and reflect on their own practice in a meaningful and contextualised way. By opening classrooms and engaging in constructive, evidence-based feedback, teachers can celebrate effective practice, identify areas for growth and collaboratively refine their approach to teaching, leading to stronger and more responsive classroom practice. This process fosters a culture of trust, collegiality and shared responsibility for learning, ensuring that professional growth is both purposeful and aligned with the needs of our students.
Recognising that strong partnerships between home and school are central to student success, members of the Senior Leadership Team and staff across the Junior and Senior Schools engaged in professional development focused on enhancing parent engagement. Through this learning, leadership and teachers deepened their understanding of the vital role that parents play in supporting student wellbeing, learning and belonging. The sessions explored practical strategies for building authentic, collaborative relationships with families, ensuring communication is purposeful, inclusive and responsive.
Importantly, staff have begun sharing these insights with the broader school community, reinforcing a shared commitment to working in partnership with parents to support every student’s growth, confidence, and achievement.
Professional development is more than training; it is our commitment to shaping confident, capable learners ready for tomorrow. When students see their teachers growing, adapting and refining their practice, they learn a powerful message about the value of continuous improvement. In modelling curiosity, resilience and a commitment to growth, our teachers inspire students to embrace challenge, take ownership of their learning and strive for ongoing progress.
