Year 1/2 Classroom News – Week 9, Term 2

As we approach the end of Term 2, our Year 1/2 students have taken some time to reflect on their learning and what makes our classroom such a special place to be. Together we have explored our three Living Well, Learning Well statements: ‘We are cared for,’ ‘We are safe’, and ‘We are learners.’ These simple yet powerful ideas help shape our day-to-day routines, guide our behaviour and build our sense of belonging and pride in the class and school community.

In English, we’ve been focusing on building our reading and spelling skills each day. Students have been practising their word knowledge through group work and games, and we are becoming more confident readers. An important part of our week has been sharing our ideas aloud, whether that’s in group discussions, reflection times or presenting our work. We’ve also been very busy learning how to write Information Reports, using Great White Sharks as our focus. It’s been exciting to create a digital slideshow using Google Slides, and students have discovered all kinds of interesting facts to share.

Information Reports with technology:  We can make a slideshow with the information we have gathered about Great White Sharks.

What’s the difference?

At our school, Year One and Two students take part in InitiaLit, a research-based literacy program designed to give all children the essential skills they need to become confident readers and writers. This whole-class program is delivered four mornings a week, from 9:00 to 10:00 am. Being on time is especially important, as this is a key learning time that sets students up for success each day.

In Maths, we are exploring length and distance. Our learning intention is: We are learning to measure, record, compare and estimate length and distances. Children have been using a range of informal units (like blocks or handspans) and rulers to compare everyday items. At home, you can support this by asking your child to compare objects using words like longer, shorter, or taller, and even estimate how far it is from the kitchen to the lounge! Measuring toys, shoes, or furniture at home is a fun way to reinforce this learning. We use ‘uniform’ (the same) informal (not rulers) forms of measure. Over the last couple of weeks, we have been learning about subtraction.  The photos show a variety of activities we participated in.

Sport has been a highlight this term, especially with the Athletics Carnival, which the students absolutely loved. We’ve been learning a range of athletic skills, including running, sprinting, discus, shotput, high jump and long jump. It’s been wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, sportsmanship and effort from every child.

Our weekly sport this week has been joining with Year 3/4 to work on cooperation and sportsmanship skills for groups, endurance and strength.

As the holidays approach, it’s lovely to see how much each student has grown in confidence and independence this term. We’re finishing the term strong, with rich learning and positive relationships across the class. Thank you for your continued support, and we hope everyone has a restful and happy break!
