Tournament of Minds

The Tournament of Minds challenge is fast approaching! Teams are in their final weeks of preparation and will be presenting at La Trobe University this coming Saturday. The teams have worked through many design challenges over the past weeks, however, have persisted to develop working prototypes to present on the day. Both teams are completing the following STEM challenge, which has required lots of research to develop background knowledge about plastic and the impact it has on our environment. We wish our teams the very best of luck for Saturday!

CHALLENGE

Your team has been asked to focus on a specific aspect of plastic pollution and its impact on the environment.

Once you have identified your specific focus, your team needs to devise an innovative device to remove or mitigate your specific type of plastic pollution. A  s part of your presentation your team will need to indicate what will happen with the plastic waste that is collected.

Your team must create a prototype of your device, demonstrate how it works and create a scaled drawing of the device (see restrictions in Section D).

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships

The topic for the reaminder of Term 3 is “help seeking”.

EVIDENCE BASE: Children can experience all kinds of challenges as they grow and develop. The help-seeking behaviours of children are fundamental to their mental health and wellbeing. Encouraging and fostering help-seeking behaviours is one way to improve mental health and wellbeing. It is important to work with students to make sure they are aware of help-seeking avenues and are confident to seek help from an appropriate source when needed.

To support student learning in this topic at home, you can discuss the following scenarios and determine how other students can help and who to go to for help in these situations.
