Congratulations to our two Lego League teams who have made it through to the National-South event this Sunday. The teams of up to 10 students are required to build and program a robot to complete certain challenges, create and present a project and demonstrate key “Core Values”.

This year’s event was held remotely with projects being presented over Zoom. Our junior team, Mindstormers, created a project about ways to reduce obesity at schools with an innovation called Vendersize – you must pedal off a proportion of the calories of a product before it can be dispensed from the vending machine. Our Year 8 team, Robot Army, created a project that involved creating a TV channel that highlights women’s sports exclusively, highlighting the disparity between the coverage of women and men’s sport.

In the robot challenge, Robot Army was 3rd and Mindstormers 10th. In the final awards ceremony Robot Army won the Core Values Award for great teamwork, sense of fun and “gracious professionalism”. Both teams were also given the opportunity to participate in the next level of competition – Nationals: South – competing against teams from Tasmania and South Australia – virtually of course!

Good luck!

STEAM Captains 2021

Congratulation to our STEAM Captains for 2021. We have lots of plans for 2021 so hope to see lots of new faces.

Senior co-captains: Rachel Chiu and Felicity Edmondson

Middle school: Nandini Vyas and Sylvia Kerr-Smith (VC)

Year 8 Digital Bootcamp

Year 8 students will take part in a “Digital Bootcamp” to finish of their IT studies for 2020 – a year where we have all had to get a bit more IT-savvy anyway. Students will participate in sessions on robotics, 3D drawing, physical computing and virtual reality.

New Robots

The Parents Association has been a huge supporter of the STEAM program and 2020 was no different. The PA donated the funds to purchase 10 new Lego Spike Prime robotic kits. These robots are the new model of the programmable robots and have been used with great success in this year’s Lego League.

The STEAM team would like to send a HUGE thank you to the Parents Association

Finally, Merry Christmas from STEAM!
