Reflection

Today we remember Fred Hollows. He died on this day in 1993 in Sydney. Fred was born in New Zealand and became an eye surgeon. In 1969 he found that almost all Aboriginal people in Australia outback communities had eye diseases caused by poor living conditions. This led him to launch a national program to treat eye disease in indigenous people. Many people are known to have said: "Only for Fred Hollows, I wouldn't be able to see."

Our reading today tells us how tireless Jesus was in telling everyone about the kingdom of God. He was always on the move so he could share the good news all over the land.

"When they found him, they tried to stop him from leaving. But Jesus said, "People in other towns must hear the good news about God's kingdom. That's why I was sent." So he kept on preaching in the Jewish meeting places in Judea."

Prayer

God of love,

your son Jesus is the light of the world.

He is a light that no darkness can overpower.

Teach us to walk in the light.

Keep us safe throughout the year

and turn our hearts to you

that we may be light for our world.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
