Reading

This week in Reading we will be focusing on the picture story book "The Tomorrow Book" by Jackie French. This book shows children both the major environmental problems of today, as well how they can be solved. Students will be completing a 'Literacy Menu' throughout the week with different tasks relating to the book. The literacy menu tasks focus on the skills of predicting, making connections and summarising. In their Reading Groups this week, each group will be reading a text presented to them on Google Meet and answering a range of questions. The focus skill for these Guided Reading sessions is making connections between the text and other texts they have read.

Writing

The students will continue learning about the writing process. Over the last week, students focused on the revising stage and began to revise the draft of their writing. They used the A.R.M.S strategies to assist with this process. This week we will look at the stage of editing. This part of the process focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar. When editing we ask the following questions:

Have I used complete sentences?

Are my spelling, capitalization and punctuation correct?

Have I marked corrections that I need?

Has someone checked my work?

Students will have this week to edit their piece of writing so it is then ready to publish next week.

Word Study

We hope your child enjoyed meeting 'The Gangsters'. These are a set of codes that can make a vowel say a whole new sound. This week the students met THeo (th), Mario (m), Nicko (n) and Vincenzo (v) who sometimes follow the letter 'o' in words and make it say an /u/ sound. For example, brother, some, done and dove. As the students picked up though, the vowel sound isn't always changed when they are near by, eg bother, from, gone, drove. The gangsters are only sometimes scary! We will continue looking at these next week.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra

This week we will be tuning into multiplication with a picture book and playing games. Students will be investigating number sequences involving multiples on the 100’s chart and representing multiplication as arrays.

Measurement and Geometry.

The focus in this area of Mathematics for the upcoming three weeks is Mass. Through a variety of hands on, practical activities students will develop an understanding of mass as an attribute of measurement. This week the students will complete a pre-assessment task on Essential Assessment. We ask that you encourage your child(ren) to complete these tasks as independently as possible.  Students will use the strategy of hefting – to lift or hold (something) in order to test its weight to determine objects which are lighter or heavier than each other. The focus is on students being able to justify and explain their reasoning.

Unit of Inquiry

This week the students will learn about where our energy sources come from. They will identify renewable and non-renewable resources and consider the positives and negatives of using them. Students will develop an understanding of the differences between renewable and non-renewable resources. By undertaking a simulated mining activity students will consider and think about how we can lesson the impact on our natural environment and sustain our earth.

Wellbeing

This week the Wellbeing Challenge is called ‘Joke of the Day’.  The students are invited to share a joke with their family every day this week.  It is hoped that this challenge brings some cheer to families as everyone adjusts to a new level of restrictions.
