Detect AI - Year 8 Science Extension Program

by Dr Bernadette Sheedy, High Ability Learning Specialist

On Thursday 19 March, Mr Dobson and Ms Katsamas accompanied a group of high ability Year 8 science students to the Science Gallery in Melbourne to participate in the Detect AI program.

Detect AI is an engaging hands-on workshop designed to help students explore the ethical challenges of AI, particularly in the context of fake news and information. Through interactive team-based scenarios, students examined how AI technologies can be used to create and spread false information, and the societal impact of this capability.

In a collaborative environment, students worked in teams to simulate the creation and dissemination of fake news using AI tools, while learning to critically assess the authenticity of information.

Student feedback:

Joel N: I learned that AI can be detected fairly easily but is getting harder to find. I wouldn't change anything about the program; it was very good. I would definitely recommend the program to other Year 8 students interested in science.

Lucas X: The best thing about the program was the exposure to multiple student-created mini-games and the workshop where we learnt crucial tips about how to identify AI.

Mia B: My favourite thing in the Detect AI program was seeing how easy it is to set up fake social media accounts and how people could be using AI in fake news. I would recommend this program to other Year 8 students because it is a great opportunity to learn more about AI.

Stephanie Z: I liked how it was unique and interactive; the gallery was very attention catching and memorable. The program was fun and gave us a lot of freedom and got us to work collaboratively.

Tully P: My favourite thing about the program was looking at all the interactive designs and learning about how AI can be used for different things.
