This Sunday the Gospel story about a man who was born blind. Imagine living in a world where you couldn’t see anything, no bright colours, no smiling faces, no sunshine sparkling on the playground!
But Jesus comes into the man’s life and opens his eyes in a very special way. In the Gospel, we will see how Jesus helps us to ‘see’ too, not just with our eyes, but with our hearts.
Sundays' Gospel - Adapted from John 4:1-38
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth. The disciples asked, “Who sinned? Him or his parents?” Jesus replied, “Neither. This happened so God’s power could be seen in him.”
Jesus sat on the ground, made mud, placed it on the man’s eyes and said gently, “Go, wash.” The man went, washed – and came back able to see.
The neighbours were really shocked at this. “Isn’t this the blind guy who used to sit and beg?” Some said yes. Others said no. But the man kept saying, “It’s me.” The religious leaders questioned him. They didn’t like that Jesus healed on the Sabbath. They interrogated him. They doubted him. But he stood firm. He said, “I don’t know everything. But this I know – I was blind, now I see.” They threw him out.
Later, Jesus found him and asked, “Do you believe”” The man said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshipped him.
Reflection
“I was blind, and now I see.” The guy in this story didn’t have every answer. He just knew something had changed – and he wasn’t afraid to say it.
Sometimes our blindness isn’t about our eyes. It’s when we judge too quickly. When we ignore someone who needs support. When we believe lies about ourselves. When we choose fitting in over standing up.
The religious leaders could see physically, but they were closed off inside. The blind man lost his place in the crowd – but he found faith and courage.
Lent asks us a simple but brave question: “Do you want to see?”
Because when Jesus opens our eyes, we don’t just see differently – we live differently.
