ART

1. Self-Portrait Exploration: Discovering Identity Through Art
Kick off the year with a meaningful self-portrait project that fosters a stronger sense of self and builds classroom community. Provide each student with a mirror and ask them to observe and draw their own faces, focusing on the unique features that make them special.
This activity encourages:
- Observation skills – Learning to look closely at shapes, lines, and details.
- Self-expression – Embracing personal identity through art.
- Individuality – Celebrating what makes each student unique.
Tip: Create a gallery wall of these portraits to celebrate diversity and introduce each student to the class in a visual, personal way.
2. Colour Wheel Creations: Exploring the Building Blocks of Art
Introduce color theory with a fun, hands-on project. Start by giving each student a circle divided into six sections. Guide them in filling each section with a primary or secondary color, helping them understand color relationships.
Once their colour wheels are complete, transition into an abstract painting session where students apply what they’ve learned. Encourage them to use colors mindfully, blending and contrasting to create dynamic, vibrant works.
This activity teaches:
- Primary and secondary colors
- Color mixing and relationships
- Creative exploration and expression
Extension idea: Display their abstract color pieces next to their self-portraits for a “This is Me” themed art board!
