Certificate III in Music (Performance)

Campus: Mordialloc Secondary College, Wednesday afternoons

Assessment: Scored

Code: CUA30920

Music Performance Specialisation provides students with the opportunity to apply a broad range of knowledge and skills in varied work contexts in the music industry. This includes making a music demo, composing simple songs or musical pieces, and preparing for performances. Continued study in this area allows students to develop improvisation skills, apply knowledge of genre to music making and performing music as part of a group or as a soloist.

Completing the Certificate III in Music (Performance) provides a gateway into the music industry in a range of different areas. These can include, Musician, Music Technician, Singer, Stage Producer, Producer, Stage Manager, Session Musician, Performer, Songwriter, Band member, Arranger, Promoter.

Year 1

The Unit 1 & 2 sequence provides students with the opportunity to apply a broad range of knowledge and skills in varied work contexts in the music industry. This includes making a music demo, composing simple songs or musical pieces and preparing for performances.

Year 2

The Unit 3 & 4 sequence includes developing improvisation skills, applying knowledge of genre to music making and performing music as part of a group or as a soloist.

Additional requirements

Students will be allocated to classes to ensure a suitable mix of instrumentalists and vocalists are provided to each group.

This course runs the group performance option only. In Units 3 & 4, students prepare group performances for internal assessment, as well as the end-of-year exam. Students can nominate to complete an internal assessment, or the exam, as a solo-assessed student.

This must be done in a group setting and negotiated with the trainer. A group setting is considered a performance completed by two or more students. In the solo-assessed environment, this would mean that the assessed student must perform with at least one other non-assessed student.

Program pre-requisites

All students are required to own a musical instrument and provide evidence that they access private music tutorials on a weekly basis. Vocal students will also need to provide evidence that they attend professional singing lessons.

Assessment

Scored assessment is available for this study. Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for this study must undertake the scored assessment. As a scored VET study this subject will contribute to the student's ATAR, either as one of the student's top 4 studies (the 'primary four') or as a 5th or 6th study increment.

The scored assessment for Music (Performance) consists of three coursework tasks worth 50% of the overall study score and an end of year performance examination worth 50% of the overall study score.
