THE LIBRARY... MORE THAN BOOKS
"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."
Abbey 2016
And just like that..
Hello St Nicholas community, it's wonderful to be back in our beautiful country, city and school.
I have been eagerly sharing my travel adventures with students as they come into the library at breaktime to welcome me back.
In turn I have been equally interested to hear of how their school days have been going while I have been away.
THANKYOU
A big thankyou to Mrs Dever and the Library Leaders for keeping the library in top notch shape while I was away.
Overdue Books
Next week your child may receive an overdue notice. Please assist your child to locate and return the book/s listed.
I know what you are thinking, not again. However as I explain to the students, the books are on loan to you and after a period of time other students begin to ask for the book you have borrowed. So it is important to keep the borrowing and returning cycle moving.
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
I have been enjoying hearing responses from the students about this fabulous book.
Some responses included:
*I liked that all the characters were Australian animals.
*The pun "Flocks Sports" was funny beacause the commentators are birds.
*We liked the message telling us to do our best and believe in ourselves even when others doubt us.
*It was a great idea having a huntsman spider as a goalie with four hands and four feet.
I hope you were able to access "Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller" on SBS On Demand throughout the week.
Some wisdom from a site I follow "Enhancing Brain'.
I wonder which point/s resonate with you most. For me it's reduces stress and improves sleep.
2026 FOCUS
Thank you, parents, for assisting your child in remembering their grade library day.
Borrowing rates are strong. With every child in the primary sector having 1 or more books in their tub for DEAR - Drop Everything And Read, and every child in K, 1 and 2 presenting with a library bag in the beginning weeks of school.
Let's keep this momentum going, building strong habits around reading for learning and enjoyment.

LIBRARY BAGS
Please note: I have spare library bags for those students who have lost theirs.
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER... Not just some of the time but all of the time.
No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink are for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
LIBRARY BAGS
We all shout.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
The Challenge is moving along with many students having completed it or nearing completion. To acknowledge students this year the image will be that of a soccer ball
in keeping with the Luna Roo theme. Soccer balls will begin to appear around the library from Monday.
Students from Yr 3 - Yr 6 will have their books recorded on the Oliver library program.
Kinder, 1 and 2 use the paper reading log, which is to remain in the library bag.
The aim of the Challenge is to promote a love of literature for enjoyment and to encourage wide reading amongst the students. This is done by restricting how many series books can be logged as PRC (Premier's Reading Challenge), thus moving students out of their comfort zone to read other genres or texts, essentially by other authors promoting wide reading.
CHOICE = Motivation
"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains comes from student self-selection of reading materials. "
How Reading Motivation and Engagement Enable Reading Achievement: Policy Implications, Ana Taboada Barber and Susan Lutz Klauda
When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the
premise that they have
C H O I C E
in what they can read and borrow.
