Holloway at 75

The year in review

Throughout this year, this series of articles has detailed the history of the Holloway campus from when the area was inhabited by First Nations people to the present day.  It is a fascinating history, and we can see how the school campus has embedded itself into the local area, quite literally as the main Brick Building is under a local heritage overlay.  As a quick review, here is how the Holloway Campus has developed over the past seventy-five years:

  • 1949 – Brick building and associated workshop building opens
  • 1952 – Technical classrooms (renovated in 1993 to become Art/Tech rooms)
  • 1958/1959 – Sandringham Girls’ Technical School (renovated in 1988/1989 (now the 30s block)
  • 1967 – School Hall
  • 1970 – Canteen covered area (now a locker bay and Year 12 rooms)
  • 1975 – School Library – built as part of a Commonwealth Government initiative
  • 2004 – Drama Works and Theatre
  • 2016 – Innovation Centre (was originally for science and is used for Visual Arts)
  • 2024 – High Performance Centre (for Physical Education/Health and Performing Arts (including a new Canteen))

So as the years progress, the Holloway campus will continue to evolve to suit the learning needs of students and staff, as it has always done.  We have on record the photos and documents to show this progress.  Who knows what the future years may bring?

There are, of course, some other college anniversaries coming up.  Next year, the Holloway campus library turns fifty and in 2031, it will be the seventy-fifth year of operation for Bluff Campus which used to be Highett High School.

As always, if the school community has any other stories to contribute, or donate (especially Sandringham Technical School yearbooks), please do not hesitate to get in contact with Jeremy de Korte (Teacher-Librarian/School Archives).
