Sports Academy Gala Day

On Wednesday, 20th November, all Year 7-9 Sports Academy students enjoyed an action-packed day at Melbourne Cable Park to celebrate a fantastic 2024.

Students participated in SHANX Mini Golf and the Urban High Ropes, rotating between the two activities in groups. In the afternoon, the entire cohort came together for an exciting hour on the Aqua Park. Students had a blast bouncing, sliding, splashing across bridges and zipping down slides.

It was a memorable day filled with laughter, teamwork, and plenty of fun, a perfect way to wrap up the year!

Athlete Development Academy

To wrap up a fantastic 2024, Erin Carter led a specialised Pilates training session for our Athlete Development students. This engaging session focused on the importance of stabilising exercises and highlighted how crucial core strength and abdominal stability are for athletic performance. Students gained valuable insights and practical techniques to enhance their training, ensuring they’re ready to tackle their future athletic goals with a solid foundation.

This year, students have enjoyed a highly successful partnership with Base Physio & Performance, focusing on developing their movement patterns both on and off the court.

On the court, the program emphasised refining speed techniques, mastering proper deceleration in both linear and lateral movements, and advancing their change-of-direction skills. In the gym, students worked on mastering foundational movement patterns, including squat, lunge, hinge, push, pull, brace, and rotate, while also learning how to structure an effective gym session.

Students were consistently commended for their outstanding behaviour, dedication, and commitment to the program. It has been incredibly rewarding to witness their significant growth and improvement throughout the year.

Basketball Academy

The Sandringham College Basketball Academy has completed its fifth year of operation and in 2024 hosted its biggest cohort of athletes to date. Players of all skill levels and genders from year 7 to year 10 worked with elite coaches Jonathan, Austin and Ellen to improve their game, develop their leadership and build connections with other students and the college. Interschool friendlies extended the players’ experiences outside of weekly trainings and the SCBA enjoyed on-court success and off-court progression.

The year was recently wrapped-up with a celebration of outstanding achievements across all the groups. We look forward to the return of existing athletes and welcoming new students from all year levels to the program in 2025. Congratulations to the award winners listed below and thank you to academy captain Mia Hakkennes (year 9) who led the academy with skill, humility and pride.

Netball Academy

As the first year of the Sandringham College Netball Academy draws to a close, we would like to commend the netball student athletes on setting a wonderful benchmark for the Academy.

Every Monday and Thursday morning at 7am (even when it was still very dark outside!) these students showed up at the courts with energy, a good attitude and a willingness to learn new skills and strategies to help improve their netball and team skills.

The Netball Academy is run by the Inspire Netball Group and is designed to progressively build student athletes’ competency in a range of skills, tactics and strategies for both on and off court situations. In 2024, the Academy athletes participated in on-court skills and game sense sessions; gym sessions to build strength, speed and power; conditioning sessions; practice matches against Mordialloc College and Parkdale College; and off-court sessions to work on mindset, goal setting, team building and an introduction to umpiring.

Inspire coaches Greg, Katie and Jade have been so impressed with the improvements they have seen in these students over the four terms and are very much looking forward to building on this years’ success in 2025 and beyond.
