The Bluff Road Library recently hosted a celebration lunch to acknowledge the exceptional students who participated in various literature activities organized by the library during 2024. The impressive attendance of so many enthusiastic students clearly demonstrates that a vibrant reading culture is emerging at Sandringham College. Among those recognised at the lunch were the outstanding form group 7F, winners of the Game of Words Year 7 Reading Challenge, they read a combined total of 6,782.689 words. Top borrowers from each year level were also invited.
Our amazing Kids' Lit Quiz (The sport of reading) teams were of course celebrated, for making it to the Australian Finals in Sydney, as were the committed participants of the Write a book in a Day Event.
This gathering provided a valuable opportunity to acknowledge the passion for reading these students consistently demonstrate. I am looking forward to offering these and more opportunities to our wonderful students in 2025.
During Headstart students at Bluff Road participated in Christmas Creations in the Bluff Road Makerspace Area, with lots of glitter, paint and pipe cleaners.
The cutest baubles were created from some wonderful imaginative minds during week 1 and during week 2 students made Christmas cards.
Winners for the Sandringham College Library Halloween Story Writing Competition were recently announced.
We had over 20 scary entries and the following students won prizes...

Looking for a book to buy as a present for Christmas. The books on this poster were Sandringham College Libraries most borrowed books for 2024.
Start a new tradition this Christmas, adopt the amazing Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod - Christmas Book Flood. It involves giving each other books on Christmas Eve, finding a cosy reading reading spot and spending the rest of the evening reading, eating chocolate and having Carols by Candlelight in the background. A great way to relax before the chaos of Christmas day.
Research has identified a phenomenon known as the 'summer slide', which refers to the loss of literacy skills over the summer holidays when students stop reading - estimated on average to be the equivalent of two or three months of reading proficiency.
To slow down the summer slide, the library is running it's annual summer reading challenge.
This is not your traditional reading challenge.
