PE News: AFL Gala Day – A Fantastic Team Effort!

Our School of the Good Shepherd Girls AFL Team proudly represented our school today at the AFL Gala Day, held at J.C. Donath Reserve, Reservoir. Despite the cold, wet and challenging conditions, the girls displayed incredible determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Our opening match against Brunswick North Primary School showcased one of our greatest strengths – speed. The "Mosquito Fleet" from School of the Good Shepherd used their pace and quick ball movement to great effect, running hard, supporting one another and coming away with an impressive victory. The win gave the girls plenty of confidence heading into their second match.

The next challenge came against a tall and physical Montmorency Primary School team. The girls matched their opponents with courage and determination, refusing to back down despite the size difference. Although Montmorency eventually kicked away to claim the win, our girls never gave up and continued to fight until the final siren.

With a Grand Final berth no longer possible, the team turned their attention to the playoff for third place against St Raphael's Primary School. Once again, the girls demonstrated outstanding resilience and teamwork, finishing the tournament with an honourable equal third-place finish.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was seeing the growth and confidence of our students. Many of these girls had never played Australian Rules Football just a few months ago, yet they embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and courage. Hopefully, many families are now hearing the exciting question, "Can I play footy next season?" That alone is a wonderful outcome and a testament to the positive experience the girls shared.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our parents and grandparents who came along to support the team throughout the day. Your encouragement from the sidelines meant so much to our players. A special thank you to Mel K, Ang S, Shannon R, Gareth M, Amanda M and Lukas C for your wonderful support. If I have unintentionally missed anyone, please accept my sincere apologies and know that your support was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to every member of the team. You represented the School of the Good Shepherd with pride, resilience and outstanding sportsmanship. We are incredibly proud of your effort and the way you supported one another throughout the tournament.

Well done, girls!
