Curriculum Overview
English
This term, students engage with a diverse range of literary, factual, and multimodal texts, developing their comprehension and critical thinking skills. They apply a variety of reading strategies to interpret and respond to texts, making connections to their own knowledge and experiences.
Students explore themes, perspectives, and issues, identifying how authors use language and visual features to shape meaning and influence readers. Through independent and collaborative reading experiences, students build fluency, expand their vocabulary, and develop a deeper understanding of how texts are crafted to engage and inform audiences.In Writing, students will explore the history and features of traditional Japanese haiku poems. They will analyse how haiku use seasonal references, imagery and carefully chosen language to capture moments in nature and express emotion.
Students will create, refine and publish their own haiku while developing broader writing skills, including effective word choice, sensory language, editing and responding to feedback.
Maths
In Mathematics this term, students will extend their learning in measurement by investigating length, while also developing a deeper understanding of fractions. They will explore concepts including position, chance, 2D shapes, and symmetry, while continuing to strengthen their knowledge of place value, patterns, and algebra through regular revision and practice.
Multiplication remains a key focus, with students building fluency in their times tables and applying these skills to problem-solving and real-world contexts.
Later in the term, learning will expand to include 3D objects, volume, capacity, and further work with fractions.
Science and Technology
To support learning at school, we encourage students to practise their times tables and skip counting regularly at home.
Simple activities such as skip counting aloud, rolling two dice or turning over two playing cards and multiplying the numbers, making and using flashcards, or concentrating on one times table each week can help build confidence and improve recall.
IPT
This term in IPT, Year 3 students will strengthen their digital skills through a series of hands-on technology projects. They will begin by researching an inspirational young Australian and designing a biography using Canva, learning how to format text, add images and create visually engaging layouts.
Mid-term, students will explore the world of block coding using Scratch, creating simple animations and interactive stories while learning how to code character sprites.
To finish the term, they will collect and present data using Google Sheets, developing an understanding of how to organise information and create basic charts. These activities will support creativity, critical thinking, and confidence in using a range of digital tools.
PDHPE/SPORT
This term in PDHPE, Year 3 students will develop their movement skills through modified games based on netball, hockey and volleyball. They will refine skills such as passing, trapping, shooting, setting and striking while applying simple game strategies and making decisions in team activities.
Students will build teamwork, communication and fair play skills while exploring empathy and respectful relationships. They will also investigate healthy lifestyle choices, including the importance of nutrition, and develop resilience by embracing challenges and applying a growth mindset. These experiences will encourage students to become active, confident and respectful members of their community.
History and Geography
This term, students will explore the importance of Country/Place to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, with a focus on our local area and its rich Aboriginal heritage. They will also investigate the ancient Maya, Aztec and Inca civilisations, discovering how these societies lived and the lasting impact they have had on the modern world.
Throughout the unit, students will develop their historical inquiry skills by analysing sources, exploring different perspectives, and making connections between the past and present.
Music
Year 3 will continue learning the recorder this term, as well as complete theory work in their Music for Cool Cats, Beginner Book A.
After learning note G on the recorder last term and playing the note in a variety of songs, students will learn notes A and B in addition, to perform more complex pieces.
Students will also continue to participate in a range of Kodály singing and movement activities.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, Year 3 students will explore how art connects cultures across the South Pacific through a variety of hands-on and creative activities.
Students will experiment with exciting techniques such as image transfer, printing, and even making their own recycled paper. They will learn about traditional art practices, including Fijian masi and Pacific Island wayfinding charts, and use these ideas to inspire their own designs.
Throughout the term, students will develop skills in pattern-making, texture, and construction while working with a range of materials such as paper pulp, foam, wood, and natural objects.
This unit encourages creativity, problem-solving, and an appreciation of how art can tell stories and represent culture.
Religious and Values Education
Our Religious and Values Education program this term continues the learning from Semester One.
We will be discovering more about Jesus, God’s chosen King sent to rescue his people from their sins. Students will investigate the events described throughout John’s Gospel and understand how these events point to Jesus as the anointed messiah. Students will engage with the content in an active way, using worksheets, games, videos, music, stories, drama and craft activities, to explore the Christian faith and see how it is relevant today.
Italian
This term, Year 3 students will revisit the theme Le parti del corpo (Body Parts). Through fun, interactive and hands-on learning experiences, students will consolidate their knowledge of body part vocabulary while developing their speaking, listening and pronunciation skills through songs, games, conversations, picture story books and role-play.
As part of the unit, students will design and create their own imaginative robot before writing and presenting a short speech in Italian describing its body parts.
By the end of the unit, students will be able to confidently identify and describe body parts using familiar Italian vocabulary in both spoken and written contexts.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden classes will be focusing on basic health and safety in the kitchen.
We will learn how to communicate and work in small teams with respect, integrity and compassion.
We will learn how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, nutritious, seasonal and delicious food.
A selection of winter foods such as warm healthy soups, homemade breads, Chinese and Indian dishes will be cooked and eaten together.
Pastoral Care
In Pastoral Care, Year 3 students have been exploring the concepts of resilience, grit, and perseverance. They have also reflected on our classroom expectations, with a focus on demonstrating respect, listening actively, and developing as self-motivated learners.
We continue to use Choice Theory, alongside Doug Dragster and The Get Happier Project, to support students in building positive relationships, strengthening social skills, and reflecting on their choices and behaviour.
This term, Year 3 students will also participate in the Child Safe units developed by the NSW Department of Education. These lessons focus on building respectful relationships, developing empathy, recognising personal identity, understanding inclusion, and learning strategies to help keep themselves and others safe.
Library
During Term 3, Year 3 students will explore the books shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Picture Book of the Year Award. They will discuss each shortlisted title and cast their votes for the book they believe best meets the shadow judging criteria.
Students will also explore this year's Book Week theme, 'Book an Adventure: Symphony of Stories', through discussions and activities designed to inspire ideas for costumes for the Character Parade on 26 August.
Throughout the term, students will continue to develop and refine a range of library and information skills through engaging library lessons, building their confidence in locating, evaluating and using information effectively.
