From the Principal

Good morning everyone, yesterday more than 100 students competed in the Division Athletics championships at Ballam Park. Whilst the results are yet to be confirmed, Mornington Secondary College had many successes. Andrew Turver broke the district record by 10 seconds. Thankyou Alex Mackenzie.

Many students participated in School Sports Victoria events such as girls and boys tennis, boys netball and girls football. Thankyou to Johnnie Walker and the staff coaches.

Year 10 Outdoor Ed. students participated in a three-day hiking expedition from Apollo Bay to the Cape Otway Lighthouse. This is the first section of the iconic Great Ocean Walk. The expedition gave students the opportunity to build on their camping, cooking skills and minimal impact bushwalking practiced in class prior to the camp. Thankyou to Grant Olarenshaw for his organisation.

Year 10 Project Ready students travelled to Melbourne CBD to learn about youth homelessness. They participated in a workshop run by the Salvation Army. They learnt how and why people come to experience homelessness in Australia. Students walked through the city and explored sites of refuge and heard stories of lived experience. Thankyou to Katrina Antoine for your organisation.

Students enrolled in VET Business walked to the Home Centre and observed potential occupational health and safety issues in different shops.

VCE and instrumental music students performed one or two selections from their repertoire for the end of year exam. Instrumental students had the opportunity to perform for peers and parents. Thankyou to Peter Southam.

Have a Say Days began this week, with approximately 20 students from Year 8 and 9 discussing teaching and learning in the classroom with myself in the conference room. Student voice was fantastic to hear.

Preliminary NAPLAN results became available this week and the raw data for Mornington Secondary College looks extremely positive.

Assistant Principal’s Mike Parker and Denise Leggett are currently on leave. I am certain they are having a wonderful time. Denise will return next week, whilst Mike returns next term.

Currently there are 2 parent vacancies at School Council. Please consider joining. We meet 8 times throughout the year. If you are interested please contact Alli Betts in the General Office.

Good luck to our three aerobic teams competing on Sunday at Patterson River Secondary.

Thankyou for your continued support.

Senior School

To students and families of the Mornington Senior School,

I wanted to start this article by saying how proud I was of the efforts of our students at the ANZAC Day March but also at our school-based commemoration on the 24th of April. Our Drum Corps, our college and year level captains and our students were exemplary as was the attitude of the students who were watching the service. It’s always a pleasure to be able to demonstrate to the community, what fantastic young people we have at Mornington. I’d also like to make a special acknowledgement to year 12 student Baden, for overcoming his nerves to perform The Last Post and Reveille in front of the entire school and many distinguished guests. It may be the last time Baden performs for us in front of the school and I thank him for his bravery over the last few years.

The Senior School team have noticed an increase in black pants (leggings, flared, straight) and hooded jumpers. To quote myself from an earlier article: I’ve taken this opportunity to link to our School Council-approved uniform policy which describes which items are available for students to wear. I’ve included a brief table of common items students may attempt to wear which are not approved and the permitted substitute items.

Unapproved Item

Substitute (Approved)

Hooded jumper

MSC Polar fleece jumper and/or MSC spray jacket

Black pants (either flared, Dickies or another brand or normal)

MSC Navy blue straight leg pants

Basketball and/or non-black shoes/designer runners

Black shoes (more than 50% leather for safety purposes)

Beanies or hats in class

Navy blue hat or beanie in the yard or on the way to school

There is a process for students to follow if they have a non-uniform item and I’ve included that process here. Notes from home (with a valid reason for not having approved school uniform items for a day) will go a long way to ensuring that consequences are not required. If the first thing a student decides to do in the morning is to deliberately defy a school expectation, that’s not a good indicator of their readiness to learn. Luckily 95% of students do the right thing, day in and day out.

Finally, I’d like to wish our aerobics teams luck this weekend when they compete in the regional competition. Good luck girls!

Have a great weekend!

Aerobics Update - It's Competition Time!

Our Aerobics Squad has been busy training and learning new routines for 2024. Our Year 7 students have shown great dedication and worked hard to learn the new skills required for aerobics. The Year 7s have formed two teams – Hurricanes and Tornadoes – who are a force to be reckoned with. They will compete in the Stage 1 competition at the Regional Competition this weekend.

The Senior Team – Boultify - are competing again in 2024 with a new Stage 2 routine. They are hoping to once again progress through regional and state competitions to compete at the national level. Their precision and strength is of such a high standard.

Huge thank you to Indie Jowett who continues to support the aerobics squad through multiple training sessions each week. Her expertise is invaluable.

We wish all three teams the best of luck for their first competition of the year and look forward to seeing their performances.

Science News from the Senior School

Highlights from senior science classes over the last two weeks. Stay tuned for some junior science highlights in coming weeks, with Year 9 students looking at ecosystems, Year 8 students learning about cells and creating cells models, and Year 7 studying chemistry.

Year 12 Biology: Students completed a practical lesson on cellular respiration. This is a biochemical reaction that occurs when different organisms breakdown glucose to produce energy. The class was using yeast and different concentrations of glucose to determine how the rate of the reaction would change. This would be indicated by a lower volume of the solution as a result of the carbon dioxide being released from the reaction.

Fifteen lucky Year 12 Biology students will be attending an exciting excursion to the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) later this monthThey will meet with scientist and PHD students working in immunology and have the opportunity to complete practical activities.

Year 12 Physics: Students completed an experiment to test Ohms Law which describes the relationship between voltage, current and resistance.

Year 11 Biology: Students tested simulated blood in dialysis tubing to confirm glucose is not filtered out of the blood in the kidneys. They used glucose test strips to test the filtrate for glucose.

Year 10 Biology and Chemistry: Students decorated cookies to model protein synthesis in cells, by decoding a strand of DNA to determine the ingredients required.

Year 10 Marine Science: Students recently went on an excursion to Mills Beach to collect firsthand data from our local marine habitat as part of their assessment on classification.

Year 10 Psychology and Forensics: Currently looking at blood typing, including the genetics involved and blood splatter patterns.
