Therapy

Fine Motor Group:

In term 3,  I (Bek)  had the pleasure of working with Jnr Mason facilitating a weekly Fine Motor session. In this session we work on developing fine motor skills to support the overall development of students handwriting skills. In each session we complete a fine motor activity with an associated handwriting task. The purpose in combining these tasks is to make the sessions fun, engaging and bring more meaning and purpose to the task.

Some fun activities that we’ve completed in this class include:

  • Making an obstacle course out of chalk and then creating written instructions for each section of the course.
  • Making and writing cards to thank the wonderful Equine Therapy team.
  • Creating our own cartoon characters and writing about their adventures.

Throughout the term students have been actively engaged and always willing to give something a try even when the tasks are a bit challenging!

Try these fun activities at home to support the development of your child's handwriting skills:

  • Writing in/on sandpaper, plasticine, cornflour and water mix, sand, shaving foam.
  • Use string, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, sandpaper, glitter to form the letter shapes. Stick onto thick cards/paper.
  • Use cooked spaghetti or noodles to form the letter shapes on a tray.
  • Roll play doh out into long worm like shapes and use these to form letters.
  • Squeeze water from a washing up bottle to form letters.
  • Make cookie letters! Have your child form the letters by rolling the dough and putting the pieces together.
  • Marshmallow letters: Use small marshmallows and toothpicks to form letters.
