The annual Respect Cup commenced with an exhilarating clash between St Patrick's and St Joseph's Geelong at Mars Stadium. In their first hit out for the year, both teams displayed immense excitement and determination to start their campaigns on a high note.

The game is of extremely high importance on the St Patrick’s College calendar. It gives us the opportunity to play against the strong St Joeys. But more importantly, it gives us the opportunity to support respectful relations in school and the wider community for International Women’s Day.

St Patrick's took control of the contest early on, particularly dominating stoppages and centre bounces with the midfield of Lachie Martin, Harry Charleson, Ned Renfree, Jack Ough, Connor Weideman and Ollie Hannaford and wingers Dean Harten, Lachie Pritchard and Cody Salmon.

Despite our early clearance dominance, we struggled to capitalise on our opportunities inside 50, failing to connect effectively with the forwards. It was Lachie Martin who broke the deadlock for St Patrick's, slotting home their first goal from a boundary throw-in. Lachie was impressive his 1st XVIII debut winning the ruck contest, but also kicking two goals.

The second quarter saw St Joseph's mount a spirited fightback, challenging St Patrick's defence by rebounding the ball effectively from the SPC front half. As halftime approached, the players welcomed the break from the scorching conditions at Mars Stadium.

In the third quarter, St Patrick's regained control of the contest, with Ollie Hannaford leading the charge and even managing to kick a goal himself from a stoppage in the middle of the ground. The momentum had shifted back to St Pats. Sam Janetski was moved to the forward line, making an immediate impact by slotting three goals in the second half. He was also impressive in his debut for the Blue, Green and White.

The final quarter saw both teams giving it their all, with St Patrick's managing to hold on to their lead in a tightly contested battle.

Notable performances were seen throughout the game, with Ned Renfree showcasing impressive contest work and athleticism, laying a brutal chase down tackle in the first quarter and almost taking the mark of the year!

Connor Weideman, Jack Ough and Harry Charleson were others that were impressive around the contest. Lachie Pritchard and Dean Harten were terrific on the wings, working their way up and down the big playing surface of Mars Stadium. Strahan Robinson competed hard in the forward line in spite of some rusty kicking inside 50 from the mids. Archie Caldow played off half back and made several dashes down the field to challenge St Joey's defence.

Round 5: SPC v St Bernard’s College (Wednesday, 6 March)

After last week's match was cancelled due to extreme heat, with a forecast high of 37C at Whitefriar’s, we were greeted with a nice 30C day at St Bernard’s. After losing the toss again, St Benard’s opted to bat first. Archie has not won a toss as Captain of the St Pat’s 1st XI, but he keeps getting the victories.

Bowling first on a green pitch it didn’t take long for Archie and Angus Jones to strike. Archie taking the first two, then Angus the next two to have St Bernard’s in all sorts of trouble at 4/10. Armi then took over and claimed a wicket first ball, and when he picked up his second wicket St Bernard’s were 6/33 in the 12th over and it was looking like an early finish. The seventh wicket though wouldn’t come for another 19 overs as they steadied their innings and put on a 61-run partnership. It was the introduction of Sam Duggan that broke the partnership 7/94. Angus came back to claim two quick wickets to see them at 9/102. They managed to bat out the last few overs to finish at 9/114 from their 35 overs. Angus, Archie, Armi and Sam being very economical also managed to claim the wickets.

In response Darcy Aitken joined Aussie McIlwaine at the top of the order. Aussie was out in the second over first ball he faced and St Bernard’s had a spring in their step. Jimmy Duxson was promoted up the order. He looked at home as we cruised to 40. Darcy was then dismissed for 21. Linc Koliba then joined Jimmy and set about leading the side to victory. St Bernard’s bowled extremely well through this stage, but Jimmy and Linc kept their composure and saw off their best bowlers. When the bowling changes were made the runs started to flow. Unfortunately Jimmy was dismissed for a well-compiled 35. At 3/74 we still required 41 runs to win. Armi Wakefield came in and was able to support Linc as they chased down the total in the 29th over. Linc remained 39 not out and Armi 11 not out.

SPC Blue v Ballarat Grammar: 5 March

SPC Blue took on Ballarat Grammar Blue in the Year 7/8 Junior cricket competition on Tuesday, 5 March.

The mighty Blues continued their unbeaten run accounting for the Grammar boys 4/113 to 4/84. It was great to see the wonderful team spirit displayed by the boys and constant encouragement of each other is great to see.

The bowling was again tight with few extras conceded. The honours were shared by Zephyr Niehaus, Carter Shaw, Jake Crack and James Bartlett who each took one wicket. An indication of the straight bowling was that each of the four wickets taken were bowled!

A number of boys managed to bat through their 20 balls. These were Jake Crack 10, Lucas Sheehan 10, and Ryan Cook 31. Ryan’s innings included five fours and one towering six.

A huge thanks to Miss Mcarthy for keeping score and ensuring that I can still count to six! We travel to Vic Park 1 and 2 again next week to take on Ballarat High, let's see if we can keep our unbeaten status intact.

Happy cricketing,

Mr Lev

SPC Green v Ballarat High School

On a very hot night at St Pat’s, the Green team took on Ballarat High School. Despite having only 10 players out of a possible 15, the St Pat's boys acquitted themselves well against a strong BHS team and remained positive.

We managed to bat out our 20 overs for a score of 6/69, but unfortunately BHS were too good with a strong score of 3/120. Well done to Tom Goodson, who made 20 runs, took 1/1 and also managed a stumping when he took over the gloves. Ollie Davis also did well, scoring 11 runs and taking 1/11 from two overs. Abel Giles top scored with a strong 21 not out. Chandan Nayak made 6 runs and took 1/23 from his two overs.

A special mention to our injured captain Oscar Romeril, who came along and played with a broken arm! Great team spirit, Oscar.

- Mr Peter Stonehouse (coach) and Mrs Robyn Cocomazzo (manager).

SPC Green v SPC Gold: 12 March at SPC

SPC Green report

In the clash of traditional rivals, SPC Green took on SPC Gold in cooler conditions at SPC. SPC Gold made a well-constructed 6/118 to overcome SPC Green 5/71.

For SPC Green, Campbell Treloar made 14 retired, Tom Goodson 7 and Abel Giles 7.

In the bowling figures, Tom Sharp was economical with 2/7 from 3 overs, while Ollie Davis took 1/13 from 2 and Tom Goodson 1/5 from 2.

Due to the Year 8 camp, SPC Green will not be playing in next week’s final round, but players are welcome to email Mr Jason Lappin if they would like to fill in next week for SPC Blue or Gold.

A big thank you to all the boys for their positive attitude and enthusiasm, and to Mrs Robyn Cocomazzo for scoring and managing the team each week. Also thanks to the grounds staff for preparing such excellent wickets and to Jack O’Brien for helping set up the grounds each week. I look forward to another fun season next year.

Regards,

Mr Peter Stonehouse

SPC Gold report

Gold Captain: Max BRODIE

Vice-Captain: Ben BRODIE

Manager(s) Mr. Kent/Mr. Morris

We met SPC Green this week and it was great, once again, to play on our home decks. The weather conditions were very pleasant again this week with the cool change being most welcome. There was a drizzle of rain before we started. Again, we had good numbers, as did SPC Green. Max and Ben Brodie doing their best to include all boys by batting, bowling, or keeping. Thanks to both lads in showing leadership and willingness to take responsibility.

Highlights for Gold

Batting: J. Costigan retired 18 runs, B. Brodie 16, N. Perera 14, M. Brodie 14, C Bull 12 retired.

Bowling: 12 boys bowled. Wicket takers were R. Jew, F. Heath, S, Volz and J.  Costigan with a smart piece of fielding producing a run out – R. Jew and U. Gambhir. We bowled five maiden overs, which shows good improvement in the accuracy of the bowlers. Sundries was top score by quite a margin with 25 extras conceded.

Fielding: The wicket keeping was solid all game with two lads sharing the duties - S. Volz and U. Gambhir. U. Gambhir removed the bails to complete our first stumping of the season. The ground fielding was very good with S. Volz taking the only catch of the innings.

Highlights for Green

Batting: Campbell batted well for his 14 runs retired while Tom. G and Abel made 7 each.

Bowling: 11 boys bowled. Wicket takers were T. Sharp 2/7, T. Goodson 1/5 and Ollie 1/13. Tom Sharp was on a hat-trick! Sundries top scored with 24 extras conceded.

A special mention to Jimmy Duxson - year 11 boarding student - who stepped in to perform the umpiring duties in Mr. Stonehouse’s absence. Thanks for assisting Mrs Cocomazzo Jimmy.

Thanks again to Mr Morris for his presence and taking care of the umpiring duties for Gold this afternoon.

Good cricketing,

Mr Kent and Mr Morris, Mr Stonehouse and Mrs Cocomazzo

BAS 2nd XI Cricket

Round 3: Ballarar Grammar School 7/89 lost to SPC 3/93

It’s always fun to play against Grammar. This year, the 2nd XI team consists of day students and we have a new captain Ace, who's a ripper — confident, talented and with a swagger that would put a smile on Kholi’s face.

Grammar batted first and never really got going.  Ace followed the coach’s instruction by keeping a simple field without slips. Hopkinson 0/30 and Vanderwert 1/9 opened the bowling and kept it tight.  Ace 2/12 and Sharp 0/10 came on second change and kept the pressure on. Wiedemann took a day off from end of harvest maintenance and yabbying to take two class wickets 2/15. Grammar 7/89 off 20 overs.

Ace and young star Irvin opened the batting, and again followed the coach’s instructions to run, run, run. The Grammar captain and fielders didn’t know whether to cut off the endless singles or stop the boundaries. Ace ended up caught after smashing three boundaries for his 30.  Wiedemann was next in and was run out without facing a ball. Vanderwert ran hard with Irvin before being caught for nine, then Hopkinson joined the run chase with seven not out.

But the day belonged to Irvin who made 42 chanceless runs and ended up not out. He only hit two boundaries, which is testament to his controlled, classy batting.  He had the Grammar fielders in all sorts.  At one point they were all within a cricket pitch length from the bat, so Irvin simply hit it over the top.  He was literally unstoppable. Just wait 10 years to see this young man playing for Australia. Three for 93 off 17 overs.

Round 4: Ballarat Clarendon College 6/100 def SPC 4/94

Playing Ballarat Clarendon College is always bittersweet for me, being an Old Collegian of the school. The beautiful oak trees and perfect surface with back drop of the clock tower, is hard to beat. I’ve always been a bit of a ground snob. In England I played at some of the most amazing grounds, such as Winchester, Tilford, Sandhurst and the home of cricket Broad Halfpenny Down, where the rules were first written – beats any dried out suburban astro turf multiplex any day.

Once again, the boys met in the middle and said a prayer.  It’s a special moment that unites us as one.  We lost the toss and BCC decided to bat on what was to prove an iffy wicket with variable poppy bounce – no change in 39 years.  Early wickets to Sharp (1/17), Ace (1/24) and two to Vanderwert held back the BCC attack, who were four for 36 after 10 overs. A middle order fight back brought BCC to 87 before Vanderwert broke the partnership with his outstanding strong, accurate bowling (3/9). Bartlett claimed the high scorer (1/13). Steenhuis (0/2), Eales (0/7) and Irvin (0/18) all bowled well.  BCC 6/100 was very gettable, but could have been weren’t it for the brilliant fielding of James Donovan-Clancy.  Fielding at the least exciting positions of short fine-leg, he was busy all day, chasing, stopping and cutting off valuable runs. Without him – and with a man short – we would have been chasing 120. Well done James!

Irvin and Ace opened the batting in the fine form they displayed last week, pinching the cheeky runs and smashing the odd four. We cruised to 0/32 off seven overs and BCC were very quiet in the field. Nothing was going their way until disaster struck. Ace was struck below the knee roll and had to retire hurt for four.  Steenhuis entered the scene offering much promise and technical ability.  The score slowed to 46 at the 11 over mark, when Irvin was out, stumped for 20.  Vanderwert batted well for five, before Bartlett left for a duck and Eales for two.

It was nail-biting stuff at the end, and it was all down to Steenhuis.  He did his very best making 26 not out, but it wasn’t quite enough to get the boys across the line, falling seven runs short.

Shooting

Winners: Year 8 student Trigger Roberts and Year 11 student Harry Egan
Winners: Year 8 student Trigger Roberts and Year 11 student Harry Egan

In 2024 we begin the year with the addition of a Sporting Clay Event at Laang in western Victoria. We were blessed with spectacular weather in rolling hills of Laang, located about 30 minutes from Warrnambool. The range is surrounded by native bushland, setting the scene for a different variation of clay target shooting, unfamiliar to many of our student team.

Sporting Clay shooting offers a variation to the Down the Line clay target shooting, designed to replicate real-life hunting through trap machines emitting clay targets at various angles, trajectories, elevations, speeds, and distances. We had 17 students represent the College in this event on the day, with all students demonstrating respect and sportsmanship in their efforts.

Our first outing to the Laang Sporting Clays Shoot was both enjoyable and fruitful for the St Patrick's College Squad. The Male "High Gun" (Senior 1st place) was awarded to Year 11 student Harry Egan with a total of 21 (out of a possible 24 targets), and the Junior 1st place was won by Year 8 student Trigger Roberts who achieved 17/24 targets. Another spectacular opportunity for our students to showcase their commitment to pursue alternative sporting interests, exhibiting composure and humility when receiving their well-earned awards on the day.

I would like to thank all parents who made the effort in supporting not only their son but also all the boys at this event and thank you to Mrs Sarah Lamanna who assisted with the organisation and support of students in their interest of sport shooting.
