Updates from our Pastoral Groups (Units)

Foundation News ~ Preps ~

The Preps have been learning how to construct and write sentences using four parts: who, action, object and when, how or where. We are working hard on forming our letters correctly, thinking carefully about their size, and using our writing checklist when we finish. We ask ourselves: Did I write what I wanted to write? Did I start with a capital letter? Did I leave spaces between my words? Did I finish with a full stop?

You can also see how our phonics knowledge is helping us make spelling choices. We are now learning about digraphs -two letters saying one sound, such as ck and sh.

You might like to ask your Prep about Jack from our Clever Clean Up story. Jack was worried because the beach was full of rubbish. How did Jack solve the problem?

Congratulations Jasmeet ~ Young Writing Recognition

We are very proud to celebrate Jasmeet, one of our Year 5 students, who recently entered a story in the Furphy Literary Award, a wonderful local writing competition that celebrates storytelling and creativity.

It is always exciting to see our students take their learning beyond the classroom and have the courage to share their ideas and writing with a wider audience. Entering a writing competition takes creativity, perseverance and confidence, and we congratulate Jasmeet on taking this opportunity to have her voice and story heard.

Well done, Jasmeet! We are very proud of you and look forward to seeing where your love of storytelling takes you next.

Book Week ~ Book Fair and Parade

Our Book Fair is coming to St Mel’s!

Students will have the opportunity to visit the Book Fair with their class on Tuesday, 18th or Wednesday, 19th August. During their class visit, students will explore the wonderful range of books available and complete a Wish List to take home and share with their families.

We warmly invite parents and carers to visit the Book Fair from Monday, 24th August to Friday, 28th August during the following times:

  • Morning: 8:30–8:55am
  • Afternoon: 3:00–3:45pm

The Book Fair is always a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy of books and reading together. Whether children are discovering a new favourite story, exploring a different genre or finding the next book in a much-loved series, we hope our Book Fair sparks plenty of excitement and conversation about reading.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the joy of reading with our St Mel’s community!

Book Week Dress Up 2026 - Symphony of Stories! Friday 28th August.

Students can join in the fun and come dressed as their favourite character or maybe as their favourite book.

Costumes can be used from things around the home. There is no pressure for families to go and buy new costumes.

Parents and Carers are welcome to join us for the Book Week Dress up parade 9am after the bell. Students and Teachers will showcase their costumes and give families a parade!

St Mel's Breaky Club:

Come for breaky… second breakfast… or even third breakfast — all are welcome!

Our new Foundation students enjoyed trying out Breakfast Club for the first time and it’s safe to say they absolutely loved it! There were smiles, full tummies and a wonderful sense of community to start the day.

Breakfast Club is a beautiful way to gather, connect and ensure everyone begins the morning feeling nourished and ready to learn.

We look forward to welcoming more students as we continue to grow this special initiative.
