Eighteen St Patrick’s College students from Years 9 to 12 were lucky enough to embark on the Japan study tour for 14 days during the September school holidays. Students started their epic cultural journey in Kyoto where they were able to visit and learn about some of the most beautiful shrines and temples in the world. From bowing deer in Nara to the rollercoasters at Universal Studios, students got to experience the most traditional and modern elements of Japanese society.
The trip to Hiroshima was emotional for many as they learned more about the atomic bomb and its impact on Japanese citizens. They learnt about the catastrophic impact that citizens of the world can have on each other and the need for peaceful negotiations moving forward.
Students were able to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of Miyajima Island before heading to a farm stay in Miyama, Kyoto. Students were able to test their language skills with their host family as well as entertaining the local primary school students, learning to make okonomiyaki, and pounding traditional mochi.
After homestay, students headed to Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, for five days of exploration. Students visited the Yokohama cup noodle museum to make their own concoctions, checked out at the fashion capital of Harajuku, the electronics district of Akihabara as well as Odaiba island and Tokyo tower.
It was wonderful to see the boys gain independence and grow into more responsible citizens of the world before our very eyes. Thank you to the teachers who gave up their holidays to allow our boys to have this incredible experience.
