Year 3-4's first week back for Term 2

What’s been happening in Year 3/4

We have a great start back to Term 2 with lots of exciting learning happening in our classroom.

This term in English we have begun focusing on persuasive texts and the concepts of argument, authorship and the importance of points of view. We are looking closely at language choices, strong vocabulary and how characters can be used to show an author’s opinion. Our focus on reading fluency is supported by our class novel Wandi by Favel Parrett.

In Maths we have been learning about addition, subtraction and inverse operations. We have learned how to find and write our own equivalent number sentences and find missing values. Our daily warm ups are including the Daily Top 10 – which is allowing students to revise and discuss mathematical concepts and games that practice the skill of addition and subtraction.

In Sport we have been learning about and participating in Cultural Games. These games haveincluded Gorri which comes from the Kimberley area and Northern Territory. Gorri involves throwinga ball (for a spear) at a moving target. Kalkadoon Kee’an is a game that comes from NorthernQueensland and involves throwing a ball into a small bin target. Yangamini is a game that comesfrom the Tiwi Islands. It is an object throwing game where players attempt to throw coins or marbles into a hole as a test of skill.

In Health this term we are focusing on the fact that we are all different. In this unit we are learning to build and enhance our relationships with empathy and respect to promote inclusion and celebrate diversity.

We are continuing our History unit from last term, where we have looked at the topics Before Contact, Great Journeys and are beginning to explore Stories of the First Fleet and then lastly Contact. This unit explores the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples before the arrival of Europeans, why great journeys of exploration occurred, why Europeans settled in Australia and the nature and consequence of contact between Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.

At the end of Term 1, we completed a Drama unit based of the Easter events. We enjoyed completing freeze frames to show what happened at each Station of the Cross. We used ReadersTheatre to read in character the events of Holy Week. Finally, we acted out the events that occurred on Easter Sunday.
