What a busy term we have had here in Grade 1/2! Over the term, our students have been delving into the world of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, which they have found fascinating! It has been wonderful watching them anticipating and predicting what will come next in our story, whilst using their imaginations to create their own lollies and inventing rooms! Who knows, maybe the next Willy Wonka is here in our classrooms with all the amazing ideas that they have been coming up with!
Information Reports
This term, students explored the structure of information reports, using books and iPads to research and develop their very own information report about an animal of their choice. We learnt about various different animal habitats, diets, lifecycles and much more! It was wonderful to see students embracing new terminology such as ‘herbivore’, ‘omnivore’ and ‘carnivore’, ‘habitat’, ‘mammal’, ‘species’ and ‘extinct’. Check out the amazing flip books they created in the pictures below! Well done 1/2‘s!
First Aid Superheroes
Our students eagerly participated in our First Aid Superheroes Incursion where they learnt some basic first aid skills, ready to help each other and their families in the case of an emergency. They were able to practise calling 000, not only on smartphones, but also on these “weird” block looking phones that actually had to be connected to the wall! Some students were quite amused by the idea of a phone having to be connected to the wall. It was great to see them practising how to dial and speak to an emergency line operator. Students were also able to practise how to put someone into the recovery position too. Check out the photos of this amazing and possibly lifesaving incursion below!
Melbourne Museum Excursion
Students were very excited to participate in our first excursion for the year to the Melbourne Museum. As part of our Discovery unit, we have been looking at the past and how the past has shaped our world into what it is today. During our excursion we were able to explore the museum exhibits, looking at animals, like dinosaurs, that used to roam the earth as well as local history in the Melbourne Story exhibit, where we saw an interactive old house. Students were fascinated by the old movie theatre, where we could view snippets of movies from the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s! One of the highlights of the day was attending ‘My Grandmother’s Toy Box’ which was run by an archaeologist at the museum, where we were able to explore toys from the 1980’s all the way to 1835!
As we come to the end of the term, we want to wish all of our families safe and happy holidays. We look forward to seeing you all back ready for another fun and exciting term!
