Discovering the Holy Spirit: A Gift from Jesus

At the Last Supper, Jesus made a powerful promise to His Apostles: even though He would be leaving, He would send them the Holy Spirit — a guide, a helper, and a source of comfort. This “Spirit of truth” would remain with them always, helping them live out Jesus’ teachings and stay close to God.

Jesus knew His followers were confused and afraid about His departure. To reassure them, He not only gave them the gift of the Eucharist but also the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us understand who Jesus is and shapes our lives to be more like His. As the Catechism explains, the Spirit’s mission is to unite us to Christ and help us live in Him.

Through Sacred Scripture and the sacraments, the Holy Spirit works in our hearts, teaching us how to love God and others, just as Jesus taught. He gives us grace, the strength to grow in faith, hope, and love.

As we approach Pentecost — the celebration of the Holy Spirit coming to the early Church — we’re invited to welcome the Holy Spirit more fully into our own lives. Anyone can ask for this relationship with the Holy Spirit. It begins simply: by asking and opening your heart.

Let this Pentecost be a time to grow closer to God through the Holy Spirit.
