Term 4 in Year 5

Welcome to Term Four! We have a jam packed and exciting final term ahead of us, filled with the FWPS Vision and Values Day in week 1, our camp to Kangaroobie in week 3, Disco in week 4, Diversity Dash in week 4, not to mention our Transition Day in week 10. We will be able to provide you with more information about these events closer to the dates.

LITERACY

Our literacy focus continues to be on the planning and drafting of Writing and the development and strengthening of various reading comprehension strategies through fiction and non-fiction texts. During term 4, students will:

  • Explore the Voice and Ideas trait through our Author Study and Poetry
  • Build on their knowledge of sentence and paragraph structures through the explicit teaching using strategies in The Writing Revolution
  • Engage in reading activities through oral reading
  • Discuss and record their scientific knowledge about the physical science of light
  • Creating brochures and also embarking on writing books for the current Grade 6 students
  • Continue expanding their knowledge of vocabulary and spelling through Daily Review

NUMERACY

The areas that will be covered this term are:

  • Comparing, ordering and converting fractions
  • Long and short division strategies
  • Constructing, measuring and recognising angles and shapes
  • Data
  • Branching algorithms
  • Coding with the use of Spheroes

UNITS OF WORK

Our Units of work ‘Puberty’ and ‘Light Shows’ come under the topics of Health and PE and Physical Science. Students will develop an understanding of the following concepts:

Health & PE

  • What is puberty and what are the expected changes
  • Investigate resources to manage changes and transitions associated with puberty
  • Research and identify age-appropriate text and web-based resources to enhance understanding of changes associated with puberty.

Physical Science

  • Classify materials as transparent, opaque or translucent based on the extent to which light passes through them or is absorbed
  • Explore the use of mirrors to demonstrate the reflection of light
  • Observe the refraction of light at the surfaces of different transparent materials, for example, when light travels from air to water or air to glass
  • Recognise that the colour of an object depends on the properties of the object and the colour of the light source

HOMEWORK

We will continue to encourage student voice in their weekly choice of reading activity. Students are expected to:

  • Read for 30 minutes, 5 times per week
  • Record this in your weekly reading log
  • Complete 1 x reading activity per week (student choice)
  • Complete at least 2 x maths tasks in My Numeracy per week (or more if you want to practise)
  • Record the name of the maths task and screenshot

WELLBEING

Students are continuing to develop their ability to effectively use their Ready to Learn plans, helping them approach each day with focus and a positive mindset. While some are still getting used to the routine, the morning structure is providing a valuable opportunity for them to settle in and prepare for the day ahead. With consistent practice, they're gaining confidence in starting their days calmly and purposefully.

In our Respectful Relationships lessons, students will be looking at:

  • Gender and Identity
  • Positive Gender Relationship
  • Consent & Body Safety

If you would like further information about Respectful Relationships, please see the Department of Education Website.

Weekly intra-school sports will continue for our grade 5 students and they will have the opportunity to participate in bat tennis, Newcombe, cricket and basketball.

If you have any questions or would like to contact your child’s teacher, you can do this via Compass.
