Book Week!

Last week was Book Week, and our school was buzzing with excitement as students and staff celebrated their love of reading. It was wonderful to see our community embrace the week with so much enthusiasm.

Throughout the week, students enjoyed Storytime in the BER, where staff shared some of their favourite books, a Book Sale with all proceeds donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, fantastic student-created classroom door displays and a special Book Week performance on Monday.

As always, one of the biggest highlights was our Book Week Parade. What a wonderful morning it was! Our students and staff looked absolutely fantastic, and it was fantastic to see the creativity, enthusiasm and love of books on display across the school. A special thank you to Carly, our Library Leaders and Library Monitors for their hard work in organising and running the parade. Their efforts helped make it such a fun and memorable event for everyone.

Laverton District Athletics

Our top athletes represented Altona Green Primary School at the Laverton District Athletics Carnival on Tuesday 25 August. We were proud to have students competing across a range of track and field events, with everyone giving their best and supporting and encouraging one another throughout the day.

It was fantastic to see students achieving personal bests, with several students performing well enough to qualify for the next level of competition at the Hobson’s Bay Division Athletics Carnival.

Congratulations to all of our athletes on their efforts and achievements, and best of luck to those progressing to the next level! A big thank you also goes to our teachers for their organisation and support, and to the families who came along to cheer our students on. It was wonderful to see so much support from the AGPS community!

Camping Season

Camping season is well underway, with our Year 4 students currently enjoying their camp experience! Over the coming weeks, our Grade 2 and Grade 6 students will also head off on their own exciting adventures.

We strongly believe in the benefits of our camping program and the opportunities it provides for students to challenge themselves, build independence, strengthen friendships and create lifelong memories. It is always wonderful to see our students grow and develop through these experiences.

A huge thank you to the staff involved in organising and attending our camps. There is an enormous amount of work that happens behind the scenes to ensure these experiences are safe, successful and memorable for our students.

The camps are:

• Year 2 - Angahook (Anglesea) 16th-17th September

• Year 4 - Camp Allambee (West Gippsland) 26th - 28th August

• Year 6 - Canberra 7th - 11th September

We will close out the term with some very tired (but happy) kids and staff!

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

Our Year 6 students will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Student Achievement

Massi – Melbourne Victory Academy Selection

Congratulations to Massi, who has been selected to represent the Melbourne Victory FC Academy U11 Boys team at the Premier’s Invitational Cup in Queensland this September!

Massi was selected from a group of more than 100 athletes to be part of the final 12-player squad. This is an incredible achievement and a fantastic opportunity to represent Melbourne Victory at the tournament. It is also a goal Massi has been working hard towards, and we are incredibly proud of his dedication and achievement. Well done, Massi!

Petar – Karate Black Belt

Congratulations to Petar, who has achieved his black belt in karate! This fantastic achievement is the result of six and a half years of hard work, dedication and perseverance. Petar has shown exceptional commitment, particularly over the past nine months, completing an intensive training schedule of four classes every week.

A huge congratulations to Petar on reaching this impressive milestone!

Times Tables Rock Stars

Over the past fortnight, all classes from Years 2 to 6 took part in the Battle of the Bands, testing their times tables knowledge. We had an enthusiastic group of rockers giving their best effort to claim the title of Best Band in the School. It was fantastic to see so many students improving their speed and accuracy across all times tables. While every class gave their all, three emerged victorious in their year level battles: 3A, 4/5H and 6E. Congratulations to the winning classes and to all students who participated—keep practising and rocking your times tables!

Food Bank Drive

Hi parents/carers, 

We are so excited to inform you that the Food Bank Drive has officially now started. We will be collecting items for next 3 weeks. Items can be dropped at the front office. 

The items we are seeking for donation are canned fruit and vegetables, soups, meals, breakfast cereal, pasta, noodles, rice, long life milk, juice, coffee, tea, spreads, muesli bars, dried fruit, hygiene products, nuts, sauces, seasoning, cooking supplies like flour, oil and sugar.

2026 Enrolments

There is a great demand for places at our school and we are required to carefully manage all enrolments to ensure there are enough places for all students who reside within our school zone. To assist us with this, please inform us as soon as possible if you have a prep child starting in 2027 or know of any other students who may be joining us in 2027. Similarly, if your child will no longer be attending AGPS in 2027 please let us know. All this information helps us greatly with planning.

Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey

WE WANT OUR PARENTS / CAREGIVERS / GUARDIANS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting the annual Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey offered by the Department of Education and is seeking your feedback. The survey is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour, and student engagement. The survey is optional, but we encourage and appreciate your participation.

Our school will use the survey results to assist in identifying areas for improvement and professional development needs in the school, to target school planning and improvement strategies. 

The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open online until 18th September 2026.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the survey period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese. 

It is a really important data set for us as we plan for further improvements to our school. The survey was completed by a large percentage of parents and carers last year and all of that data was used when planning our Annual Implementation Plan.

Information about this survey will be sent via Compass and we encourage as many people as possible to take the time to respond.
