Weekly Values Focus - Respect

Week 7: Footscray West students respect one another

At our school, showing respect to each other is the foundational, baseline standard for how we interact with each other. This means that we start with the belief that everyone deserves to be shown respect, no matter who they are. Starting this way reflects our own good character and treating respect as a default means we value people's humanity before anything else.

We don’t wait for people to earn our respect – we just treat them the way we want to be treated right from the start. Doing this creates a safe environment where people feel seen and heard, regardless of their who they are, what they do or what they believe.

We can show respect in many simple ways each day. We can use polite manners, take turns when speaking, and listen carefully when someone is sharing their ideas or feelings. We can include others in games and conversations, look after shared spaces, and use kind words even when we disagree. Respect also means trying to understand another person’s point of view instead of judging them or leaving them out. Small actions like these help people feel seen, heard, and cared for.

While respect is a given, disrespect can occur when we choose to treat others poorly or to behave in ways that make others feel unsafe. If you want others to respect you, it really helps if you always treat others kindly and fairly.

This week, think about how you show respect to the people around you. Are you listening carefully? Are you speaking kindly? Are you considering how others might feel? Small choices like these make a big difference and help make our school a place where everyone belongs.
