VCE Art Making & Exhbiting students at the Top Arts exhibition.

VCE Art Making & Exhibiting students recently visited the annual and inspirational Top Arts exhibition at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square. The Top Arts exhibition provides a platform to showcase the extraordinary works of art and folios that achieved outstanding results in VCE Art Making & Exhibiting in 2023.

Our students also had the privilege of visiting the retrospective exhibition of artworks by the late Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta and Barkindji artist Josh Muir (1991 – 2022). Josh was an St Pat’s Old Collegian, a connection that was felt by our students when viewing Josh’s works, and speaking with the Koorie Heritage Trust staff.

The exhibition highlighted the strength of Josh’s artistic practice and the important contribution he has made to First Peoples art and culture in South East Australia and contemporary art nationally and internationally. Josh’s love of family and community was evident, and the work drew on a range of themes including cultural identity, the impacts and legacies of colonisation, mental health, addiction, personal loss and grief. Art Teacher Matt Taylor was able to provide a personal reflection to students and Koorie Heritage Trust Staff on his time spent teaching Josh at St Patrick’s College.

We extend our gratitude to Arts staff members, Matthew Taylor and Wendy Sheridan, the Koorie Heritage Trust, and the organisers of the Top Arts exhibition, for providing our students with this enriching opportunity.
