House Music Showtime

On Friday, 22nd May students in years 3-6 participated in House Music Showtime. This is an annual performance led by students where they pick, choreograph dances to songs and teach the dance to other students in their House. This year Nelson won - they used wonderful teamwork, skill, and dance ability. Congratulations!

Soul Sonics

On Monday, 25th May, 22 students from Years 5 and 6 participated in an exciting Soul Sonics DJ’ing workshop with Jason, a teacher and professional DJ who travels around the world for his work.

Students explored the DJ decks and learnt how to create loops using digital music software. They experimented with recording a variety of sounds to create bass drum beats, melodic sounds and other interesting effects, creating their own unique sound palettes. Students identified effective sounds to use in their tracks, including bass drum beats, strong snare drum and hi-hat sounds.

The workshop also introduced students to editing techniques, where they trimmed and adjusted sound clips to create clearer more direct sounds and more like the sound of different drumbeats. They then organised the sounds into 32 steps exploring rhythm and time signatures with 4 beats dividing beats into patterns such as 1+2+ 3+ 4+ (8 steps) or 1e+a 2e+a 3e+a 4e+a (16 steps).  Students also explored beatboxing rhythms using simple phrases such as "boots and cats" to help structure looped patterns.  This hands-on workshop was a highly engaging and valuable extension opportunity for students involved in music lessons at OPS.
