Year Six Team: Marco (leader), Kieran, Marshall & Mikala

What’s Happening In the Grade 6 Department for Term 1?

The Grade 6 Department is looking forward to a busy and productive 2024. We have begun the year with class building activities, incorporating our new school values, along with focusing on creating a safe and inclusive classroom environment.

The extra-curricular events have already commenced with the swimming trials taking place, and throughout the term, grade 6 students will also have an opportunity to represent their school in cross country running. Towards the end of the term, students will start to select and try out for the winter interschool sports teams, which will commence early in term 2.

In reading, we will further develop comprehension strategies including questioning, activating and connecting, and summarising and synthesising. Individual conferring and goal setting will continue to be part of this process. In writing, revision and further development of students’ skills will be fostered within the Writing Revolution. Students will work on and be exposed to a number of different texts including narratives and persuasive texts.

In numeracy, the main areas to be covered this term include place value, chance and data, and measurement. We will also be revisiting many mathematical concepts in the Daily Review. Students will be using a range of problem solving strategies that explore many areas of maths to find solutions to real world tasks.

This term, science and leadership become our unit of work focus with students investigating ‘What makes an effective leader’ in our ‘Lead the Way’ unit. Students will explore leaders across all fields and then research and create a homework project presentation about their chosen leader.

Homework will commence in week three with the first work due in week four. The specific day of the week that homework is due has been set by your child’s teacher. Students are expected to read at home five times per week for a minimum of 40 minutes, complete one reading reflection, and work on maths activities through the Essential Assessment website. The details will be posted on Google Classroom. Please allocate some quiet time at home for your child to complete the homework.

This year’s Grade 6 Camp will be held at Log Cabin Camp, Creswick from Monday 25th November - Wednesday 27th November. More information will be distributed during the term.

If you have any questions you can contact your child’s teacher through Compass.
