Pastoral Wellbeing

Welcome Back!
Hello everyone and welcome back to St Mary's PS as we commence what is looking to be a very busy Term 2. I am excited to catch up with all of the students after an extended holiday break and begin working more closely with families this term to embed the MHiPS and TRP programs within our whole school community. Please, always feel free to contact me via the school if you'd like to discuss my role at Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader and supports we can offer your child and family at our school.
The Impact of Sleep on Memory
During the extended holiday break, teachers and LSO staff took the opportunity to engage in professional learning as part of the Catholic Education Sandhurst Magnify program around the Science of Learning with Dr. Jared Cooney-Horvath. Jared began his career as a teacher, before moving into the field of Neuroscience. He was a terrific presenter, who was engaging and knowledgeable and he shared some fascinating insights into how our brains work in regards to learning. One of the topics he highlighted to staff was around the importance of sleep in regard to memory retention and learning. Please see the below article for some interesting reading around how our brains require sleep in order to retain memory and learn.
The Resilience Project (TRP)
Students were eager this term to recommence their TRP lessons after a 3 week break during the school holidays. We are excited to continue our learning around the GEM traits of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness and begin learning about Emotional Literacy as well. We will also begin adding to our lovely GEM Jar, created by Mrs Innes for students to add reflections each week of examples of the GEM traits they've experienced during the week for us to share and celebrate. Please click the link below for some FAQ's regarding the TRP program.
